Citadel Fires PLJ Staples, but hires Perez Hilton???

I can't understand how a station could fire people like Lady Di from PLJ, and then go and hire Perez Hilton.

Do they honestly think their targeted demo will listen just for him? Most of their listeners probably haven't even ever heard of Perez Hilton.

How do you know if they are paying for those segments?

That's puzzling..i thought PLJ was goin' after the "soccer mom" crowd...and then they hire Perez Hilton - i thought his demo was like 18-49 male or something (i saw him interviewing Tiffany "New York" Pollard for some special he did on E! a few months ago....)...who told them to do this - Farid Suleman or something?? Sca-ry.... ???

Huh? What's male about "flamboyant" celebrity gossip?

I'm just basically stating Perez' demographic...whether it's flamboyant or not is of no concern of mine...Perez is Perez and no one's gonna change that....

I Think Gerryr's point was that Perez Hilton's fanbase is decidedly FEMALE.
Most celebrity gossip is geared to women. So it would fit well with PLJ's
target demo.

Wrong and Wrong. Their demo is part of the demo that drives his web site hits through the roof. Who the heck do you think is going to a gossip page? The other difference is tat he isn't reporting the stories ripped off of his site and others,....he is actually living some of it.

You're telling me the average "soccer mom" has time to peruse Perez Hilton's website? I think his demographic is to a much younger crowd.

which is PRECISELY MY point - 'PLJ is PERCEIVED as a station whose demographic is "35-54 soccer moms" - so WHY on EARTH did they hire Perez Hilton?? ???

For the same reason they play Kelly Clarkson and Maroon 5 and have their DJs banter about last night's reality shows and American Idol?

I could be completely off here but judging from alot of the songs PLJ has been adding lately, is it at all possible they could be slowly leaning back to a Top 40 format again? This could explain some of the recent changes.

PLJ's core demo is F25-34.

What's all this talk of "hiring" Perez? If you're referring to the syndicated segment show, it's a minute long, and bartered. Hardly part of the same equation as jocks that are let go.

As for F25-34, the CONCEPT of Perez makes sense, but the execution of his segment is terrible. All about him...very little about the subjects at hand.

Perez Hilton, or more specifically "Radio Perez: Celebrity Juice, Not from concentrate" is an ABC Network syndicated product. http://www.abcradionetworks.com/Article.asp?id=666638

I'm not saying that Radio Perez belongs on PLJ, but Farid and company are shrewd business people. Citadel is always looking for opportunities not to explore new revenue potential, but to cut expenses that exist. This was a cost cutting move. Why pay to duplicate services that you're already offering?

I have only caught a few minutes of Perez Hilton on what I believe was MTV where he went around telling kids to say how Avril Lavigne sucks. If this is his way of reporting celebrity news and gossip, I just don't get it.

Plus, when you have a great personality like Patti Steele on your morning show, why wouldn't you just use her? She's much more relatable to women than any Perez Hilton type will ever be.

I'm in complete agreement. Whether Perez is a good call or even of any impact at all is questionable.
However, Citadel and especially those at PLJ are VERY aware of the stations demographic core and
how to appeal to it.

For years, PLJ and people like you have made the same mistake over and over again. That every 35 yr old woman has no laptop, no pop culture interest, no PDA's, no DVR's and no life outside of driving a van. Guess what. That isn't accurate. Many 35 yr olds have listen n the car, listen at home while kids are in school, have kids who don't play soccer, and check gossip sites at night, on their phones, watch gossip shows, etc. And yeah, they watch Idol and reality shows. June Cleaver ids dead.

Scott and Todd said on the very first day the following statement: Can Perez keep up the daily 5:30 or so wake up call every morning, considering his partying life style? He was late his first show, and I think totally missed a segment one day and wasn't even on.

The first few times he was on the air where really tough to listen too. He sounded half asleep and seemed to ignore most of the questions once he really got going. I tend to avoid most Entertainment shows, and usually ignore Patty's Entertainment report.. if only because the stories are so insipidly self serving on the celebrity side, who cares if Paris Hilton got into a sniff because her new garbage can wasn't pink? Pointless stories like that even Scott and Todd don't seem to care about :). But after hearing Perez Hilton, I appreciate the energy and enthusiasm Patty brings to her reports.......

Ah, but with all those distractions, they'd have no time for an old crock like WPLJ, would they?

Remember: in radio biz establishment terms, "soccer mom" is target-market code language for something like this.

Actually I know A LOT of "soccer moms" and they joke with me how they have no idea what new "adult" music is out because they are too busy listening to the latest Hannah Montana CD or whatever type of music their kids like. One of them jokes about how she can only listen to Opie and Anthony when her kids aren't in the car, which is not very often.
