WLS Drops the Axe

Posted by Roe's Conn on 2/29/2008, 3:26 pm

Here are some of the major parts of WLS that have been shown the door --

Jennifer Keiper, news director

Bill Cameron, city hall reporter

David Jennings, reporter

Christina Filiaggi, traffic reporter

Nate Clay, talk host

... also Jake Hartford.

Others included a sales manager, an engineering assistant, a production assistant, a producer, and several others.

Tom Kelly is doing the traffic today on Roe's show and there is no mention of him filling in for Christina, and Jake was kind of joking
around about it on his show last weekend when someone called in to say he needs his 7AM hour back. Jake is always kidding around
about stuff, but it sounded like he knew something was up.

How terrible! Some good people are off air, and I hope they can land on their feet. I will especially miss Jake's program. That show has given me a lot of laughs over the years. I hope he'll land somewhere like WGN.

Just tuned into Nate: disappointed Coast-to-Coast is on. What a shame. I had the feeling Jake was in trouble but for a number of reasons I thought Nate would survive.

This one hurts!

Are we sure Christina's on that list? She's still on the Web site, and everyone else isn't.
Christina was not mentioned in the Sat Chicago Tribune business section story outlining the layoffs.

She AND Jim are a big enough part of Roe's show that dropping either one of them is sheer foolishness.
I am always more inclined to listen to WLS on drive-home because they're more fun.
Take away the party atmosphere at your peril, Citadel.

I worked at WLS twice. I was shocked and saddened to see what has happened to the station after Drew Hayes and Mike Elder left. It's just such a shame. WLS is a Chicago legend. I bet more syndication is on the way. How sad to have all these people from New York City on the air in Chicago.

In my opinion...the station went down a notch when YOU left, Jay. Now it's gone down a whole bunch
of notches in one fell swoop. Great, more lameness on the way. Steve Scott put a lot into building
that news department...which, I believe, set WLS apart from other talkers. Good thing he took that
job in New York when he did.

I read on another radio blog that Christina may be picked up by Metro Traffic and then once again be a part of The Roe Conn Show.
I hope this is true because I missed her on the show Friday, I think that she adds a lot to the show, it's not the same without her. I am
also a big fan of Jake Hartford his sense of humor is absolutely tremendous and he is a great talent. I hope he is picked up by another
station because I will really miss his show waking up early on Saturday morning's.

Sad. How can you gut a news department on a news/talk station in an election year?

Farid overpaid and the best talent left while he waited for approval. Somebody is going to buy some major radio station cheap soon.

Amen, Jay .. from a fellow Chicagoan who was up the street in River North .. at a legendary AM that got completely blown up.

Face it -- Suleiman is in over his head.

Thanks everyone! WLS was a great station and you are all very kind.

Even better than Jake's show on Saturday's were the good old days back in the 1990's, when he was on Saturday evenings from 8:00 to Midnight and Sunday evenings from 9:00 to midnight. I hope he lands somewhere soon, and I wish he had his own blog or web site. I think he still works in TV behind the scenes, so if that's true, atleast he didn't lose his fulltime job. but I should find my recording that WGN put out after Bob Collins' death of years earlier when Jake or Jim called into the station to do a skit on Bob's show about performing circus frogs.

A 50K power house will not languish. Citadel may have bit off more than they can chew. They will likely be looking to dump a couple of properties.

Thank you for the kind posts here and elsewhere.

The Bob Collins bit was the "Furtive Family of Fine Frogs." Kind of ironic that I'm on WGN's all time best cd but never made the WLS anniversary cd.

Note to Jay: I miss the fun times that we occasionally had when you were at WLS. You and I said goodbye to the old century and hello to the new one that one New Year's Eve. Last year I drove across country and got to hear you as I passed through Colorado.

Don't ask me why this happened. I spent nearly 20 years building a brand there and it was over in a less than one minute phone call without even a "thanks." And it's not like the ratings weren't good. Go figure.

I was sorry to hear the news, Jake. Hang tight and talk to everyone. I still believe that there can be powerful talk radio on the FM dial. It's too bad that CBS felt FM talk had to be juvenile and gutteral instead of humorus and thought provoking. Maybe Dan Mason will try again and succeed.

Good to see Jay Marvin on the board. It was a sad day when he left the Big 89 the second time. I'll never forget seeing him at Stars on Stage. Hard to believe that in the 2002 Spring arbitron, WLS was ranked #2 12+ and tied and beat WBBM a number of times 12+ in 2004. The last year's nosedive is the result of a loss of talent and vision.

The good news is that WLS always comes back and often invites good talent back to help.
Maybe Farid will be force to sell it and launch another wave of good radio.

Jake! Good to hear from you on here. You were great on the air, and great to work with. Man, we had some good and funny times together. Someone will pick you up. You're too good not to have a gig!

Hello Jay and Jake!

Even in 84 years, there's a finite number of people who've had the privilege of saying the WLS call letters on the air. We are three of that finite few.

I'm so sorry for those who lost their jobs at WLS. My thoughts are with them. These are tough times.

Steve! It was a sad day when you left the station. You are one of the best. You know Mike Elder is over at FOX. Do you ever get to see him? I also heard Eileen is married and pregnant with twins. Good to see your name up here.
