Citadel-Little Rock should do some swapping

I've always tried to figure out why Citadel does the simulcast of 920/102.9. While it may increase the nighttime audience of KARN, that's about it. The daytime signals are basically the same, so nothing is gained. As a watcher of L.R. radio ratings for over 15 years, KARN is about at the same place in the ratings as it was 15 years ago, when it was only on 920 AM. With the growth of KOKY-102.1 FM, I would put KOKY on the stronger 102.9 signal, and either put KARN on 102.1, or do something else with that frequency and allow KARN to be on 920 AM only. It just seems to me to be a waste to simulcast when nothing much is gained - ratings, coverage area, etc. If the L.R. radio audience values KARN programming, which I think they do, they will go to where they can find it. I don't think this would harm KARN and would only help the very popular KOKY. And besides, KOKY rocks!!! Thoughts??

102.1 is really the best place for KOKY, in spite of it being just a class A signal. What else would you do on that stick that could get that kind of ratings? Besides, it's really a very good signal considering where the audience is, and it's probably better for its target audience than 102.9. 102.1's signal is right downtown, and the audience isn't far away. 102.9 is licensed to Sheridan with a transmitter deep in Saline County.

Although I agree with you that 102.9 might be better served with a different format, I don't see KOKY's format as being a solution. 102.1 puts a better signal where its target audience lives, and neither it nor 102.9 puts a good enough signal into Lonoke or Pine Bluff. Remember, 95% of a station's audience is within the 64 dBu signal contour. Lonoke is just outside 102.9's 60 dBu contour (let alone the 64 dBu signal), and Pine Bluff is just barely outside the 64 dBu contour.

Besides, it's really a moot point for two reasons. The first is that talk is migrating to the FM band to get younger. While results of moving successful AM talk stations to FM have varied, most of them have gotten a little bigger share of the 25-54 audience, which AM talkers have steadily been losing as their listeners age. The second is that Citadel has no longer has any control over KOKY beyond that it gets to decide who buys it and the sale price. The station is in the hands of the Last Bastion Trust, and Citadel cannot legally make any day-to-day decisions over there regarding programming or sales.

Speaking of Citadel...I saw a job posting for a morning show host/producer for KARN on All Access a few days ago. Is Bob Steele leaving?
