Citadel Makes Bid For WLNE

Citadel, which owns several radio stations as well as a few TV stations, has made a $4 million bid on the currently-in-receivership Providence station:
http://www.pbn.com/channel-6,55537

The WLNE receiver calls Citadel the lead bidder because they are "established, successful and financially secure." Incidentally, wasn't Citadel recently in bankruptcy themselves?

I figured something was not up to snuff... kinda like when there were two entities named World Vision, saying they're not affiliated with the other one...

Good article on WLNE'S potential top buyer. I especially like the part where Citadel's owner says if he acquires the station he would like to start broadcasting in HD. Its about time!!!

How about a sub channel on 6.2? Antenna TV or the Country video music channel>SOMETHING..

Citadel currently has RTV on 3 of it's stations' subchannels (the 4th having AccuWeather since RTV is on another
station in that market). Of course in Providence, RTV is already on WJAR.

I'm surprised WLNE never put "NewsChannel 5" on as a subchannel.

My god that would be funny if WLNE beat WPRI/WNAC and WJAR to the HD punch. The fact that a bankrupt TV station up for sale could potentially be the first in HD kind of sums up how lousy this TV market is. WLNE's competition consists of:

-A TV station that is old, stale, and tired. It has been #1 in the ratings for decades because of their colorful NBC logo and that viewing habits in RI never die. Technologically speaking, this TV station hasn't even caught up to the 21st century when it comes to broadcasting, whether it be breaking the NBC programming out of HD to show the school closings or election results.

-A TV station trying as hard as it can to displace the old, stale, and tired TV station. When it comes to the technical side, it offers a good amount of HD content.

Sad to say...but that's exactly the reason Channel 10 doesn't have to try very hard.

I've heard the theory before that the reason why WTEV/WLNE was never able to get a foothold in the market is because it's "third in a two station market".

But....what if this is only a One-and-a half station market? After all these years...I'm finding it tough to see it any other way... :(

Funny, but true! Years ago before all 3 Boston stations went HD - I remember Channel 5 was way ahead of Channels 4, 7 and 25 - I normally would watch 7 or 25 - but switched over to 5 ONLY because they were in HD. I can't imagine how no one in Providence is doing news in HD yet. I bet if 6 or 12 beat 10 to the punch on it that they would gain significant amounts of viewers (and then the other would probably follow as soon as possible)

Right now Buffalo is the biggest TV market without HD news. However, one of their stations does news in widescreen. So Providence is the largest TV market without any news in widescreen nor HD. Almost every TV market smaller than Providence has at least one newscast in HD.

WJAR has always been the old, stale, we haven't changed anything since Bill Clinton was originally elected TV station. WPRI/WNAC always have sworn by "If it bleeds, it leads", and WLNE....well yeah....

You can make fun of WLNE, but they have put on the best product in Providence at times over the past 3 decades. It's simply that people apparently turn to 10 out of habit in Little Rhody.

Whoever ends up with WLNE in the end, will they have enough money to take back Dr. Phil and ET, or will they have to stay stuck with the second-rate, off-network syndicated game shows?

I took a look at the other stations Citadel owns and they all have the same website, same graphics, same set, same music, and same logo. They're all HD but honestly, it all leaves a lot to be desired. Check 'em out for yourselves.

One other thing, does anyone else find it troubling that the company doesn't have a site of its own? ???

Not a bit. I've seen several stations with websites by WorldNow:
KAZT 7 Prescott AZ (Ind.), owned by local Phoenix company: http://www.aztv.com
KOLD 13 Tucson AZ (CBS), owned by Raycom: http://www.kold.com
KGUN 9 Tucson AZ (ABC), owned by Journal Broadcast Group: http://www.kgun9.com
KTNV 13 Las Vegas NV (ABC), owned by Journal Broadcast Group: http://www.ktnv.com

From what you describe, this Citadel has bigger problems than who does their website.

Citadel is not known for being a great operator. I'll put it like this, of their four stations, two are on upper-VHF and two are on low-VHF, including the only full-power station on channel 4 in the entire country. All four have UHF translators in the city of license itself on very short towers basically to help indoor antennas in the cities themselves, but that's it.

I don't think that any of Citadel's stations are #1 in their markets.

I saw the Citadel websites and they look pretty good. I think they will do a great job if they end up buying WLNE, which in my opinion has the best newscasts and dedicated staff. The question is as hard as they try, will they persuade more viewers to watch their programs? And how about Citadel buying WLWC TV 28 as a sister station, like LIN TV has with WPRI and WNAC?

Let's keep in mind that the Citadel involved with this stalking horse bid is not the same entity that operates several radio stations (I made that same mistake in the original post... ::) ).

Actually, the point you made earlier about Citadel was taken in my post, which is why I wrote, "this Citadel". I meant to imply that this Citadel is not the same as the radio station Citadel. I guess I could have been a bit more clear.
