I don't know. Haven't seen the Mall display. But a few
years back, there was a website called The Citadel Death
Star and on it were personal stories of people who worked
for the company and were let go. I haven't logged on to it
lately so I don't know if it's still there or not. When I
was a Senior Account rep there, we were losing so many sales
people that we started to keep count. I started in Aug of 98
and noticed that in my first two weeks, eight sales reps left.
So I began to keep a number log on my desk of the reps who
left. In the corner near the pictures of my sports teams and
women was a big number in bold print. When we hit 40, a few
of us decided to give "parting gifts". So when a person we
were fond of left or got fired, we'd go to Kevin's up in
Throop and got them a Citadel button down blue shirt with the
logo on it and a coresponding number. When I got fired in
April of 2000, I was number 68 which I have on my shirt. I
was fired on a Thursday. It was supposed to be a Monday but
I took the day off for my wedding anniversary. So they fired
someone else. On Tuesday, they were set to fire me but I had
a root canal and they fired another guy. On Wednesday, they
couldn't find me because I was in Tunkhannock doing cold calls
and by the time I returned, the managers were gone but did
fire somebody in my place. Finally on Thursday they got me.
You know it's happening because all the other managers know.
One manager in particular who was one of the biggest idiots
you ever wanted to meet (and later wound up at Cable where he
annoyed his GSM there by sitting in the conference room telling
stories about Citadel all the time) avoided eye contact with me
that day. Another ducked into a stall when I entered the men's
room while another just looked away. You know when you're
getting canned. When they did my exit interview with the GSM
and the HR rep, I stretched it out for an hour asking questions
like "can you please reintepret your language on that last
statement?" or "I really don't understand that particular line
of thinking regarding my performance. Can you elaborate?" Anyway,
I got my denim shirt with the big red 68 on it. In 18 months, I
was the 68th sales rep to leave. We had thoughts of starting a
Citadel Reps Alumni Association, doing community service stuff
like that but then figured we'd be giving them way too much credit
so that idea died.
