Citadel to replace all LIVE talent on KGO with syndication

Ok, radio groupies chew on this one awhile....Happy New Year !!!

"Goodbye Mr. West....I mean KGO" "Dun Doonk, Dun Doock, Dun Dun Dun Dun Da Dun Dun"

I assumed Mr. Rippy was having us on. How stupid would it be to jettison the one thing KGO has going for it (well known live local hosts) to become just another ho-hum low rated talk station like KNEW or that Green thing? They wouldn't even save much in the short run because they'd have to pay off a bunch of contracts - and the station would surely lose tens of thousands of loyal listeners, and tons of revenue in the long run.

On the other hand - I can see Citadel "testing the waters" by putting in one new syndicated show in the old Bernie Ward slot to see what the reaction (and ratings) would be.

I can see one other possible money saver - putting talk shows (live or syndicated) in mornings and afternoons instead of news. With the popularity of KQED (NPR) now a proven thing thanks to PPM, and KCBS AM & FM on the ascendancy, the KGO news blocks are superfluous...in my opinion.

From what I understand, except for a hiring freeze, Mickey Luckoff has been given autonomy in running KGO, or at least as much autonomy a nearly bankrupt company can give. I don't anticipate any problems at KGO. I suspect that if Citadel continues to have financial problems, they might be inclined to sell KGO, but this could only benefit KGO. I'm sure the format would remain intact. You don't mess with success, especially in this economy.

Why, without substantiated fact, let alone sheer "goofiness" would anyone post a headline as scurilous and untrue ... and unimaginable as this?

Poster makes no sense.

Just because "you can" doesn't mean "you should" ... especially without "fact." And you have none.

I live in the Detroit metro area (which has Citadel owned WJR) and listen to KGO frequently on my internet radio. I also have family in the Bay area so I listen when I visit. I hope all in the Bay area market realize what a gem KGO is. Compared to WJR, KGO programming is crisp and engaging. To me KGO really represents what a true "heritage" radio should be. They have a great shedule of live & local shows that allow listeners to call-in, etc.

I often send notes to WJR telling them to benchmark KGO (and WBZ, and KFI) - of course they do not respond. The problem with WJR is that they claim to be Detroit's heritage radio station (at one time they were) but most of their programming is syndicated - not live and local. They give all their available prime-time radio time to syndicated programs (Mark Levin, Dr. Laura, Truckers Network, blah, blah, blah, etc.).

I hope KGO does not get forced into this type of programming that has destroyed so many other once-great radio stations.

Fight-On!

p.s. what happened to Karel?

He and a studio board operator made a boo boo. While the mic was still open at the beginning of an hourly network newscast, Karel reacting to a news report went on a rant about Joe the plummer containing words that should never be allowed to go out over the air and as a result Karel was fired.

And, hence their longterm success.

Very well said.

KGO has now moved all Paul Harvey broadcasts to KSFO. Probably a good move in light of shedding programming that 1) isn't there on a regular basis since Mr. Harvey left last February and 2) to shed some older demo programming, while not harming the base in light of the PPM.

If the topic header here were ever to come true, it'd be the most monumental screwup in American broadcasting history.

Yes, even given the current economy and Citadel's precarious financial situation.

Anybody remember this post?

And you thought I was joking...

It's a Grand Canyon sized leap between laying off 3...or even 3 dozen employees during an economic downturn, and gutting the station of all live and local talent.

If you truly feel this way, you could WRITE to Citadel's top management. By write, I mean sending a letter via snail mail. People don't pay much attention to emails, but they do pay attention to snail mail.

If there's still an industry for him to get back into, in a few years, that'll make a great story to tell the young 'uns.

Reporter Greg Edmunds, Gregg Jarrett (anchor with Rosie Allen), late nite & weekend producer Harry Hall, Internet "producer" David Rich and Mickey Luckoff's 41-year secretary, Susan Olstrom were terminated.

You weren't even close to "everybody." Two of the people were "on air."

In a note, it was revealed, "We expected layoffs for sometime, but I didn't expect one to be my co-anchor. We'll just have to continue the standard and try to have fun with the afternoon news."

Get it straight, DominoRippy . Man up and be a professional before you post BS. Some of us have close connections to a lot of wonderful people, a few of these, here. The decision wasn't known, FYI, for certain, until Monday. Tuesday, it came down.

hey when your stock is 33 cents you gotta do something...maybe fire farid :D

$.33 a share?

Try $.21 cents a share.

Citadel hasn't been at a quarter a share for 2 months, at $.30 for four months and at a dollar a share since ... well, since, it dropped from $2.32 a share early .... very early in 2008.

They have been notified of being delisted from the NYSE if they don't get over a buck a share ... by March 1.

Ya think they'll make it?

Didn't think so.

Oh, and the Board of Directors of Citadel pays Farid's salary of $11-million a year, plus .... pays his taxes, as well.

And his wife, Judy, is Chief Operating Officer.

You figure it out.
