For all those Birmingham news/talk/sports fans, I'd like to post this question:

Why does WAPI perform badly? They have history, Hannity, Boortz, Harvey, 50k watts. What's wrong?

For the employees of WAPI:

Is it a positive work environment? Is there an expectation of success? Do you like your job?

For Citadel:

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!?!? You have an AMD show co-hosted by someone with market experience, strong syndicated programming, ABC news and have I mentioned the 50k daytime signal?!?!

Who's in charge over there?

Start programming the station
or
Change format
or
Sell the station
or
Transfer the signal
or
Sign off

If they bill well, that may be all that matters. But, you still have a point--they probably could be doing much better ratings-wise.

Theres nothing compelling or polarizing on WAPI. Why listen to them when you have Rush and Finebaum on WERC, or Russ and Dee and all the other local talk programs on WYDE. Birmingham is all about local programs, local news, weather and frequent traffic reports. Most syndicated programs don't fly in Birmingham...API is loaded with them.
Side note...isn't the PD of API the engineer at Citadel?

With actual promotion, stronger local content in both drivetimes (Not that D&W are bad, but they just don't stand out among the other options at all) and a FM simulcast (Could they buy 101.7 from CC or Glen Iris or whoever actually owns it? That's a decent signal being wasted on duplication), they could make it.

But this isn't a big talk market anyway and they wouldn't gain much even by doing that.

Geez...you mean Glenn Iris Baptist is still simulcasting 91.9 WGIB on WQEM 101.5? You're right, an absolute waste. A commercial broadcaster could probably make some money in the South-of-Birmingham suburbs and Shelby County.

That is a commercial allocation, isn't it? IIRC, it was originally a repeater of the Q, hence the calls.

Even if it's non-comm, Samford, Jeff State, or Air1/K-Love (EMF owns translators that repeat WGIB already, so there are ties there) would put it to much better use than it is currently.

This would also make a great pairing with WBEI in the Tuscaloosa market. A WBEI/WQEM combo could give someone a much better coverage area with which to play. Is there a still a 101.7 translator in the Birmingham market as well, perhaps of a Huntsville station?

I remember from when I was 'Bama being able to pick up WQEM when it was on 103.7; after it moved to 101.5, WZBQ pretty much had the CHR/Pop scene to itself in Tuscaloosa.<P ID="signature">______________

I believe the 101.7 repeats Lite 96.9 WRSA (which is probably more of a Cullman/Decatur station, actually). I can't get it here because of an Anniston religious translator.

Er? The Q has always been on 103.7. They just used 101.5 as a repeater at one point to get more Rick and Bubba listeners in Birmingham (which should say how long ago that was).

They probably come in fine in T-Town from the new tower and studios.

WQEN has always been on 103.7. At one point they came in OK in Tuscaloosa, but around 2000 or so I couldn't get 103.7 at all, and only could hear the Q on 101.5 (not real well thanks to Tide 101.7).
