Citadel where cost cutting is ongoing

After laying off 2% of their workforce Inside Radio quotes the head of Citadel as saying the cost cutting is ongoing. The next focus is on Backoffice Operations. I have no idea what that means, traffic, engineering, promotions? Also, every airshift must be "justified". Wow, that really doesn't sound good.

The ABC stations as you might expect turned out to be a big drain on the company.

I have noticed looking around on the web if any of the broadcast companies have "Help Wanted" ads it's always in sales, not operations.

Wow when I think of all the years I did overnights with no commercials I feel very fortunate. That sure wouldn't happen today. Now there are commercials and no jock.

Note also Suleiman's comments to analysts about Hannity.

Gee, wouldn't it have been cool if we were actually told WHAT those comments were, instead of having to go look it up to understand the post!

While there's rarely a shortage of workers in sales or any other dept in radio...there does tend to be a higher turnover in sales forces since the job is very metrics-defined. Salesfolks that can't sell enough are quickly fired for not meeting quota...salesfolks that CAN see enough are usually skilled enough to take a better job at a better station very quickly.

Sulemaniac Logic

Sales is unimportant. Half the business walks through the door, and all you need are order-takers to service the clients.

No, I haven't lost my mind. I'm paraphrasing Citadel's "Fearless Leader" Farid Suleman. If you haven't seen Jerry Del Colliano's column at Inside Music Media, check it out here.

I can think of one cut that Citadel could make that might enhance the bottom line. Isn't there someone from the old ABC group that can do a better job than this?

From the 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission:

The Radio Network was notified that one of its key news talk on-air talent intends to terminate his agreement with the Company in June 2008. The Radio Network is currently involved in contract discussions with this key news-talk talent, but may be unable to retain such talent. However, the Company does not believe that the loss of any single on-air talent or program would be material to the Company's overall business.

Now I have seen and heard it all. All this time I thought the sales jobs were safe. The order taker thing works for TV but radio is not TV.

You know you would think that sone savvy ABC exec could have knocked this guy to the curb and taken over. Maybe Farid should look for a nice McDonald's franchise he can run and leave radio to radio people.

"We don't need servers. All we need are order takers. The customers can pick up their own burgers and fries as the cooks dump them into a bin."

Sorry to say Rox, there's more truth in your post than you might imagine. It could be radio is going the way of the automated Home Depot checkout station. "Please scan item and put in bag. When done, press 'finished'."
