Cities Still Airing Shows Based There

After many years, there appear to be a few constants on some stations.

"Seinfeld," based in New York, will continue to air in reruns there (it will be returning to WPIX next year after several years on WNYW).

"Fresh Prince," based in Philadelphia, still airs on weekends on WPHL.

And "The Andy Griffith Show" remains on WFMY in Greensboro, NC to this day. (One could argue that Mayberry is not too far from that area.)

Are there other examples that qualify?

Actually, I show was based in Bel Air, CA, hence, the name "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Will Smith's character was from Philadelphia and he made an occasional return to Philadelphia, but the show was set in Bel Air.

Chicago's MeTV still shows "The Bob Newhart Show" and has plugged it as a local show. Now, they show a lot of classics that have disappeared elsewhere so I am not sure that it indicates much. Still, it's there.

Who's airing Cheers in Boston now? Is it still on WSBK? That show was been a staple there for years.

You mean Ange isn't a daily syndication staple on WZAZ-TV Siler City? ;D

The CBS Television Distribution website which is being discussed in another thread has information on these shows:

The Beverly Hillbillies - KZSW in Palm Springs would be the closest
The Brady Bunch - KDOC in LA
Cheers - WBZ and WSBK in Boston
Everybody Hates Chris - WWOR in New York
Everybody Loves Raymond - WNYW in New York
Frasier - KSTW in Seattle
Happy Days - WMLW and WDJT in Milwaukee
Hawaii Five-O - KWHE in Honolulu
The Honeymooners - WPIX in New York
Laverne and Shirley - WMLW in Milwaukee
Mork and Mindy - KWHD in Denver would be the closest
The Odd Couple - WPIX in New York
Perry Mason - KDOC in LA

Now for some of the more unbelieveable ones:
Bonanza is not shown anywhere in Nevada
Gunsmoke is not shown anywhere in Kansas
I Love Lucy and Taxi are not shown in New York
Matlock is not shown Atlanta, although iit is on WSAV in Savannah and WLGA in Columbus

While they don't show it as regularly as WFMY, WRAL in Raleigh holds the rights to The Andy Griffith Show in the Raleigh/Durham market (which includes Siler City, though most of the other towns mentioned on the show are in the Greensboro market).

The show is a big deal here in North Carolina...Mount Airy, Mr. Griffith's hometown and the inspiration for the fictitious Mayberry, relies on the show's fans as a tourism draw. I also remember when "Aunt Bea", actress Frances Bavier ( who spent her last years in Siler City) died in 1989 at age 86, WFMY ran a breaking news crawl.

Actually, their sister station, WWOR, has been airing the show - every night, in fact, right before "The King Of Queens" - another "flagship favorite". Makes me wonder how long that show will air in the market...

And when they were, the station was, ironically, WNYW (also as the former WNEW) in New York.

And yes, jwk1979, forgive my error - of course, not only is Will from Philly, but his fictional persona is, as well, per the lyrics ("In West Philadelphia, born and raised...").

Where do you live? You are right on the nose about your geography. Actually, Andy airs on WRAL Saturdays at 7:30, although back in the '70s and '80s he was on every day, just like on WFMY. Another station not terribly far from Mt. Airy, WDBJ Roanoke, VA, also shows Andy at 5:30 five days a week, as WFMY does.

TBS did air "Matlock" in daytime for several years in the '90s and early 2000s; I think they even paired it with "Perry Mason."

And BTW, I don't think too many people in Siler City shed tears when Frances Bavier passed away. She tended to be a recluse, preferring to spend time with her houseful of cats, and that alienated a lot of people in the town.

And does Genoa City, WI ("The Young And The Restless") count? I know the real Genoa City is just a small town, hardly noticed when people drive through on the way to Lake Geneva, not the metropolis the fictional Genoa City is. If it does,
I'd think they'd see "Y&R" on WBBM Chicago and/or WDJT Milwaukee.

Re the soaps, "Bold And The Beautiful" is set in Los Angeles;
it airs there on KCBS. The only other daytime soap I can think
of that took place in a real city and can still be seen there is
"Ryan's Hope" (New York, if SoapNet is available).

The Odd Couple - WPIX in New York
...WPIX had a late-late-night block of New York-set sitcoms for years. I fell asleep watching The Odd Couple on WPIX via Dish Network on the early morning of September 11, 2001 -- the TV was still on when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center...

WPIX still airs The Honeymooners and The Odd Couple - but overnights... and on weekends, to boot...

Well, Andy Griffith is no longer aired in Charlotte, after WAXN/64 dropped their long time double stripping for, get this, Wendy Williams! last year.

WNEW-TV 5 New York (now WNYW Fox 5) had been running I Love Lucy at least once a day for decades. I believe that was true through the 90s. Even into this century, I believe it was running on Sunday afternoons till a few years ago.

I've noticed in the South, Andy Griffith was sort of the I Love Lucy for many markets, running well into the color era, even though many stations would not run any other black & white shows. It was on in nearly all markets till around 2000. In some cases it was even on a major network affiliate leading into their evening news.

As stated above, WPIX 11 New York has also been running the Honeymooners almost continuously since the 60s. There were a few years when I think it was off the schedule but then those "lost" episodes were found.

I beleive WCAX-TV CBS 3, Burlington VT, ran the show Newhart for many years after it went into syndication. The show was set in a Vermont country inn. WSBK Boston also ran it after most other independent stations had dropped it.

I'm in Durham, where WFMY came in almost like a local on analog VHF 2 (and still does, most of the time on UHF DT 51) Lots of stories around here from our Chatham County neighbors about Frances Bavier's time there. The statewide UNC-TV Public TV Network to which Miss Bavier left her estate is actually based in Durham, in Research Triangle Park.

Are there other websites similar to the CBS website that lists the stations where shows from a particular distributor are shown? I know there have to be other shows that haven't even been discussed yet.

...are there any Washington, D.C., stations currently airing any version of The Twilight Zone? ;D ...

"...are there any Washington, D.C., stations currently airing any version of The Twilight Zone? "

No, but there us certainly at least one with Looney Tunes on the schedule. Or maybe it's just Capitol Hill coverage--after all, doesn't Mitch McConnell remind you of Elmer Fudd?

...nope. Chuck Jones would never have put up with McConnell's nonsense ;-) ...
