City's New Year's Eve Special To Air On Nearly All Chum TV Stations

For the past two decades, CITY-57 has produced and broadcast a live New Year's Eve musical special from Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square which has apparently become somewhat of a tradition in Canada's largest city and dominant television market.

This year, it will be televised nationally---at least in those markets where CITY parent Chum owns a "City TV" or "A-Channel" TV station (this means all Chum-owned stations except CKX Brandon). It will be seen live on CITY in Toronto and the A-Channel stations in Ontario; and on tape-delay on the "City TV" stations in Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver as well as the "A-Channel" station in Victoria (so that the celebration at "12 Midnight" will be seen at 12 Midnight local time on each station carrying the show).

This is a press release from Chum Limited detailing plans for the show as well as a listing of performers scheduled to appear.

With New Year's Eve being a Saturday night, CBC will be into the second game of the "Hockey Night In Canada" doubleheader at 12 Midnight EST, and likely won't have any New Year's special programming---unless the "late" game's start time is adjusted so that the game would be in the intermission between periods two and three at Midnight EST to allow for a brief live cut-in to a "countdown to Midnight" in Toronto or Ottawa.

Does anyone in Canada know if CTV or Global will carry any Canadian-produced New Year's Eve programming around 12 Midnight EST?? Or might City/A Channel have the only nationally-broadcast Canadian-produced New Year's Eve special??

Global/CH airs New Years From Niagra Falls each year. I believe a holdover from Ontv. I assume that all CH stations would air it and that Global Saskatchewan/Manitoba would also run the special as well.
______________

CTV New Year's Eve (Was: Re: City's New Year's Eve Special To Air On Nearly All Chum TV Stations)

Today (December 18th), CTV put up on it's website local affiliate program schedules for the week of December 25th-31st. On New Year's Eve, CTV will broadcast "MTV's New Year Of Music" (likely simulcast with MTV Canada and/or MTV U.S.) from 10:30 P.M. to 12:30 A.M. local on all CTV affiliates except those in the Atlantic and Newfoundland time zones, where something called "BT New Year's Eve" will be seen instead.

But then again, 2006 will arrive in Newfoundland an hour and a half before and in the Maritimes an hour before it does in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto.

Sun TV, when it was Toronto 1, had the MTV coerage, I believe, as MTV Canada (as it was called then) was owned by Craig Media, along with Toronto one.

Now that MTV Canadian rights are in the hands of CTV, what will Tor..er, I mean, Sun TV do?

If I remember correctly, Global has aired New Years from Niagara Falls for quite a few years...I think they had it in 1993 and every year since. Not sure when they started, and I don't know what CHCH had back then.
______________

"BT" is "Breakfast Television", the morning show on ATV (the only CTV affiliate in the Maritimes) and ASN (which, no doubt, will also be involved in the special).

And their New Year's Eve coverage is live from the Grand Parade in downtown Halifax, where those stations are HQed. ATV/CTV Atlantic airs coverage 11:30-12:15 AT that night, with ASN starting their coverage at 10 AT.
