CIWW/1310 News changes

Ottawa's 1310 News has tweaked their format somewhat adding 'talk' into the mix. In the mornings they've pitted Ed Hand against ('The Legendary") Lowell Green, with the cheeky 'Talk to the Hand' (don't they know the connotation of that phrase?), while during the noon hour, evenings and weekends appears to have given over to simulcasting Toronto's CJCL 590 'The Fan'.

I'm not happy about this change. I feel like they've given up on the station. It had only been in the news format for 2 years. Audience growth has been very slow, but it was that way with 660 in Calgary as well. That station took a very long time to get where it is now. I know the format is expensive, but if Rogers can find money for something as useless as hockey, then they can find the money for the nation's capital and 4th largest city to have a 24 hour news station. I guess the first sign they had given up was when they started recording the overnight news a year into the format.

Talk to the hand is decent. A much better show in my opinion than Lowel Green. It's not one sided political talk like Lowel's is. Not having a noon newscast is stupid, and Ottawa doesn't need a second sports station. CFGO isn't doing very well and if it wasn't for the Sens, they would be dead. I guess the station doesn't care about anything outside of drive time...might as well turn it off if that's the case or only transmitt during the drives. Or sell it to someone who would actually give a damn about giving the city a much needed alll news station.

I have to agree with you Mimo. All news should have worked in Ottawa. Rogers was borrowing most content from sister station 680 in Toronto anyway.
It couldn't possibly have cost all that much to run. There wasn't even a local sports guy.
Peter Gross was doing sports updates from Toronto.
Business news & various other sources of information were all coming from Toronto.
It's a whole lot better than repeating Toronto's AM 590 when there's already a TSN 1200 doing the all sports thing.
Sometimes Rogers just doesn't make any sense!!

When Jim Flaherty passed last week, I didn't think to tune to 1310 like I normally would have. I was tuned to CJAD Montreal at the time who actually interrupted a commercial to bring the news. I didn't seek out 1310 for more info until 4:30 that afternoon.
