CKCL becoming "Fun 104?"

Both radioinsight and Airchecker Canada are reporting that, very soon, CKCL (“FM 104.9” Vancouver) will become “Fun 104.” This could be an outright format change, or simply a rebranding of the Classic Hits format currently on the station. Anyone near Vancouver might want to monitor CKCL until Christmas or New Years. This will be interesting…

A format change is highly unlikely as the PPM's have been pretty good to CKCL (so far). A much improved share compared to their numbers under the old diary method. The station recently ran a "Name That Radio Station" contest, so I would have to assume it's just a rebranding.

I wonder if this means Rogers will try to grab the CFUN calls from CTV Globe Media? Even though 1410 in Vancouver is still officially CFUN it's been quite awhile since they've actually utilized the calls (except during legal ID time).

You know what?
Since the freedom to play more oldies on FM in most of Canada today is a fairly recent decision made by the CRTC,
I'm thinking that it could be that all they're doing is a little tweaking of the format a bit and giving the station a new name to draw better attention to it.
I could be dead wrong though.

Rogers CKCL 104.9 in Vancouver flipped to "104.9 FUN FM" at midnight Nov. 12th. The Oldies-Classic Hits format remains intact and the calls are still CKCL according to the legal ID, but there is a lot of speculation locally that they will grab the CFUN calls from CTV Globe Media which recently flipped CFUN 1410 in Vancouver from Talk to Sports becomming Team 1410.

As of this morning the new website for FUN FM was not up and running yet, but their new logo can be found here (courtesy of Wikipedia):

An update on the situation. According to Saturday's Industry Canada database release CKCL 104.9 was a granted a call change to CFUN, while CFUN 1410 was granted a call change to CFTE.

Thanks.

Looks like Radio locator has some Updating to do!

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Radio-locator's Canadian listings are drawn from the FCC's AM database, and the only purpose of the Canadian listings in the FCC AM database is to let U.S. licensees know what facilities they have to protect internationally. So it's of no concern to the FCC whether the callsigns for the Canadian listings are correct - or even if the Canadian stations shown there are really on the air.
