CKLW Signal

I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that CKLW is not coming in well in Cleveland at night. In the past, their nighttime signal (at least on the west side) has been better than their daytime signal. Now they're virtually unlistenable at night. Have they changed facilities, are they operating at reduced power, or have the Cubans running some mega-watt transmitter on 800 lately?

They replaced their towers not too long ago, and did an equipment change too a few years ago. I also think I read somewhere that they altered their pattern slightly, to reach more Canada and less US (a CRTC requirement).

It's surely not The Big 8 we all remember.

johnny-i remeber in high school listening to dick purtan count em down. now cklw is essentially lib and women talk with, among others, the satelite sisters, joy brown, melanie deveaux, and larry king. their program guide says they still do canadian national news thru CHUM and local sports for an hour at dinner-definetely a far cry from THE BIG 8!!!-david5258

Re: CKLW DOCUMENTARY-A MUST HAVE!

WVIZ PBS ran the Big 8 TV documentary Monday night.

If you are a fan of the Big 8 and you ever get a chance to get your hands on this DVD-do it!

It has everything, the jocks, the newsguys (20/20 News) the profound effect CKLW had on the 70's music industry.

I would assume VIZ will sell it to you, (for a pledge) they were hawking it during on pledge night Monday.

Jersey,
I actually had thought their and WJR's signal has been much weaker the past 3-5 years. I just attribute it to increasing interference from radio waves of other sources.

I got the DVD for Christmas and it's great! In addition, CKLW aired a reunion special with 20/20 news, airchecks and plenty of jingles including my favorite one, the acappella merry christmas jingle. Though Cleveland had great radio back then, CKLW was my favorite station in the late 60s up to 72.

Definately not the CK we remember from back in the day. More info about Bill Drake's brainchild can be found at www.thebig8.net

The signal still heads down towards West Central,Ohio(Lima,Sidney,Piqua,Troy
and Greenville)and eastern Indiana(Ft.Wayne,Portland,Muncie and Winchester)
with it's present news/talk geared for Ontario listeners. More info about the demise of the Big 8 can be found at the aforementioned tribute site.

In the meantime, Cleveland college jock Joe Madigan frequently gives references to CKLW's Top 40 era and plays a few Johnny Mann accapella jingles on his WIXY-1260 tribute show "Retro Radio" on Tuesday afternoons(and during the summer on Thursday mornings)on 88.7 WJCU-FM(www.wjcu.org)

CK has definitely adjusted their pattern to favor Canada and decrease skywave into the US. The government mandated this (and the Ontario-focused format) as a condition of license.

BTW, you can find the entire CKLW reunion special as broadcast on air at www.northeastairchecks.com.
