CL: WREK Faces Proposal to Go Commercial

There's an article in Creative Loafing about Georgia Tech administration proposals to make WREK "commercial":

They didn't consult me for this one. The premise is ridiculous; you cannot "convert" a non-commercial license in the reserved band to a commercial one. Tech sold WGST in the early 70s, and they relinquished the 94.1 license in the 50s, so they've given up their opportunities to have a commercial station.

I thought that commercial bands have to be limited to 92+...Am I incorrect?

What a sad state of affairs. Who is more stupid, the administration or the students? They have a major signal in the 9th market and are clueless about the FCC. If the athletics board think they can make a ton of money, let them buy a station.

That is correct. 88.1-91.9 is reserved for non-commercial stations. I think leasing time to certain people or organizations is OK, as long as advertisements are not aired. GT football broadcasts carry advertisements.

If they want to lease out the station, I think it should be leased to the Atlanta Board of Education for 24/7 classical music, with WABE 90.1 going all news/talk (I made a post about this situation earlier).

I think the idea is to make money from athletics. If so, they will need to move to the commercial FM band (and that will be impossible, since the FM band is full in Atlanta) or AM.
