I'm very sorry to hear this. We traded tapes back in the 1990s and then lost touch due to various moves for each of us. He came across to me as a very generous, open person.

I'll crack open that box of tapes today as a small memorial.

Sean Ross takes a listen to an aircheck of Clarke from 1981 and shares some thoughts.

Oh, man, I found this in the box of tapes that I traded with Clarke. What a snapshot of another time, and of Clarke's bemusement with some of the stations out there.

I was briefly working mornings at WYSS in Saegertown, PA in 1979 when a group of DJs from 96KX in Pittsburgh stopped by the station one day. I vaguely remember the moment and Clarke told me online several years ago he was part of that group. They were known to aircheck radio stations along their journey. Probably, a really bad aircheck out there exists of me, lol.

In the last year, as mentioned in Sean's article, Clarke was hanging out his consultancy banner again and was hoping a station would take him on so he could turn their ratings around, albeit remotely. Sadly, there were no takers. May he rest in peace.

I have family that lives in St. Albans, VT. and once lived in Plattsburgh, NY. When I was 17, I was able to visit WIRY in Plattsburgh where the late Gordy Little, who was Op Manager/PD let me sit in with him for an hour or so. I believe Gordy was still there in the 1990s.

And that story of Clarke driving up to a remote transmitter site and meeting a guy using the name Clarke Ingram.. was the guy who became Flash Phelps at XM, etc.. it was at the original transmitter site for WKYN 97.5 St Marys, PA.

As told in a TSOTW feature

So sad to hear that Clarke passed. I've been listening to a lot of his airchecks the past few days and wowwie - what a talent! One of the last of an era, for sure. An absolute master at hitting the post. Wish I would've caught him on 620 WKHB doing oldies, but sadly by the time I discovered those wonderful stations he was no longer there.

I know he's spinnin' 45s up there at the great radio gig in the sky...
