Classic CCM-based station is coming..

Hey everybody,

My family is giving me a computer for Christmas to help with the
creation of a classic contemporary Christian music station/ministry
which should launch during the first quarter of 2006. The format will
be called "Music of New Life."

Now armed with CDs, vinyl LPs and 45s that span the years 1977 - 2004
I feel more ready to finally get this project off the ground.

I've decided to begin as a webcast on Live365 with it, although a full-fledged Part 15 AM isn't far behind.

I'm told that MusicMatch is a good system to use to convert records to mp3s.
Anyone know of anything better..it's got to be simple for me, there are
thousands of songs in this library!

The website for now is at http://www.expage.com/musicofnewlife

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

Alan a/k/a radioboy

P.S. to smashedcd: I saw Michele Pillar's "Walk Across Heaven" in there..I
seem to remember you liked that song..

I hope everything goes well with your classic CCM program. Don't forget some of the great CCM that preceded 1977 such as Randy Matthews, 2nd Chapter Of Acts, Barry McGuire, Ron Salsbury & the J.C. Power Outlet, Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Imperials, Tom Autry, Alpenglow, Petra, Evie, Praise albums from Maranatha Music!, Resurrection Band, Paul Clark and I'll probably think of tons more later.

I personally have enjoyed the ease and functionality of a program called dBPowerAmp. It's absolutely free also, unless you want to encode songs to MP3 format, which costs $15 or something like that. The software comes with an Auxiliary Input Recorder so that you can record tracks through a line-in or mic input from your sound card. To check it out, visit their website.

Hope this helps. Best wishes to you and your efforts to launch this station. May it glorify the Lord through the praise of the music and the edification of the listeners.

Re: more great pre-1977 CCM

Here are more great CCM artists from before 1977 who helped get the music started; Andrae Crouch & the Disciples, Dallas Holm, Jessy Dixon, Love Song, Honeytree, Larnelle Harris, Sherman Andrus, Arkangel, Sweet Comfort, B.J. Thomas, Dan Peek, Gentle Faith, Gary S. Paxton, Danniebelle Hall, Becky Ugartechea, Pat Terry Group, John Michael Talbot & Terry Talbot. Many of these artists are probably not available on CD and it will be difficult to locate broadcast quality copies of the vinyl. For many of us who became Christians back in the early days of "Jesus music", this music was a contributing factor to our decision. And that's A, if not THE, purpose of the music, isn't it?

You sure are bringing up a lot of good memories!

After your post below, I started looking through the albums and found some
early stuff..when I began in Christian radio in 1983 (after a couple of years at a light secular AC) many of the artists you mention here were heavily played on WCVC. At that time, I was not very familiar with CCM artists other than David Meece, Dan Peek, B.J. Thomas, Larnelle and a few others. I know that WCVC began as a Christian station on New Years Day of 1977 but I don't know what music they had earlier than that, but I'm sure there must be some, because I've seen almost all of the artists you mention here. And, I will use them.

Some of the WCVC vinyl is a little scratchy; but there are some duplicates from WJEP, where they converted their music to cart and didn't play off the albums on-air much.

The song that first made me aware of CCM enough to get my attention was "Keepin' My Eyes On You" by Twila Paris.

Interestingly, the station manager at WCVC called me this past Monday and said he had found some more albums stashed away. Guess I'll be adding them to the collection. He is a good friend and a great guy.

I'm putting a lot of thought and prayer into this. It's kind of ironic that I have ended up with the music library that helped me make a living in Christian radio for the last 20 years. When they ditched all the music and were leased out to EWTN, I opted to retire at 46. But DJs don't quit, they just..

How about Michael Omartian? He put out some great pre-1977 music (and he and his wife Stormie put out even more stuff through the 1990s.)

For those who haven't heard of him, he was a staff producer at ABC records, producing mostly secular acts. He later worked with Donna Summer and Christopher Cross. He also produced arguably the two best Imperials albums ever - "One More Song For You" and "Priority."

Also, don't forget DeGarmo and Key, although they may have started more around 1978.

Re: more great pre-1977 CCM

You're right. As a matter of fact, Michael Omartian's first CCM album was on the ABC label, not Myrrh or Sparrow.

Add Phil Keaggy to the list of early CCM artists.

Sounds exciting. I've booked marked your web site. Can hardly wait for it to start streamin' as it's praisin'. Don't forget Keith Green, not to mention all the others everyone has already mentioned. Many great CCM artists, your play list should be awesome. May God bless your station as I'm sure it will be a blessing, especially to those of us who were blessed by those early CCM artists which will add another way for some of us to bring our praise to the Lord and offer an opportunity for the younger believers to be blessed by these pioneers in CCM.

Good point. There are A TON of music and artists ignored by today's CCM, which I can't really to anymore because it all sounds the same and is way too much commercialized.

I don't mean the music is junk or unappealing, most (not all) of it sounds the same. Little variety. But I haven't listened in a long time. It's not appealing when I do listen.

For those that like the older, better (more creative) artists, this group discusses them. There's even some downloads of older LPs.
