Classic Country 1520 KKXA Billboards

A billboard campaign for an AM radio station?
Shocking!

Actually its great to see Andy Skotdal continue to push local radio. He's putting money where his mouth is not only asking local businesses to advertise but showing the importance of advertising himself.

Great Andy! Now get some streaming, and get some classic country/alt country artists to come here and have concerts, we could be having a REAL classic country station coming out of the woods...

FM quality stereo hi-fi? 256k or higher? No AAC? No annoying pre-run video ads or pop-up player windows? A dedicated server built to take MEGA-HEAVY streaming loads? A simple SUPER high quality link you can play in your favorite media player?

Tell me more........

I don't know, but I do know I was bummed out when one of my favorite stations got their audio taken off uStream. I guess RIAA must have caught on they were streaming music *and* commercials over their (alternate) stream.

Whatever happened to the streams that opened in your media player? They seem to be going away rather rapidly. I have a PDA I got about 6 years ago that is running the latest software and the developers won't seem to listen. We need Flash and we need it now! Cumulus streams and those through streamtheworld, as well as probably most non-com stations are the only ones compatible with it anymore. I wouldn't know the non-com situation well because I don't pay attention to those stations much, but I do know that Liquidcompass has shut off the Windows Media streams a couple years ago, and no matter what, Abacast doesn't work, and they only have a handfull of Windows Media streams left. Looks like the Cumulus stations will disappear when introduced to the IHeart Radio platform as well. I'm going to miss the player that the former Citadel stations use, it's awesome!

Ok...so here's the streaming dilemma all of struggle with. First of all, even the most popular stream still has a very small audience. Second of all, that audience is often spread all over the world, so local ads are irrelevant. Then, the more audience you develop on your stream, the more you pay for bandwidth...but you've charged your client a flat fee losing more money the more your audience grows.

It's a great service to us radio geeks that we can listen all over the world (like the time i heard WNDY in Indianapolis on a bar radio Florience, Italy)...but unless your model is aggregating a national audience and selling it at a very low CPM (Abascast, Liquid Compass, etc.) there is NO there, there.

I applaude Andy for almost everything he does...and he'll do killer streaming if he sets out to do it...but making money? That's to be determined...

Ditto what Jackson said

Agreed. Spike was just explaining to me how they decide breaks, it makes the most sense to take them at the top and bottom of the hour. That's kind of unrelated, but it is related to the revenue aspect. I kind of wonder if Cumulus or other companies don't really care about how much revenue the stream makes they just want to have it out there because that's where the industry is going. The spot delemma is an interesting one that has downfalls no matter where you turn. Man, this is actually quite similar to the gay marriage bill in that whatever happens, there are going to be some people that are unhappy, pretty much what Bob Rivers was saying this morning. Here's the two sides, you have the local spots, which I like because you get the local flavor of the market, but not much revenue from me, who is 2000 miles away in some cases. The other issue is that if not timed exactly right, you can have spots of dead air on the stream when a local spot is finishing, or it could come in in the middle of a spot. I've also heard the stream cut off to go to separate commercials before the audio is finished playing.
