Classic Country 95.5 The Hawk Switching Back To K95.5

They say that K955 will go back to mainstream country with the switch so who knows. I wonder if they sell Wink to Saga so we could get a simulcast of mix 107.9 so we can hear it better on the south end. They might bring back the Big Wazoo. All remains to be seen.

Interesting to see them go back to the K 95.5 Branding.... Wonder if they could shift "wink" to a classic country format?

WHOK is running on air announcements about the return of the station you loved, K95.5 on Monday 1/14

I am at a loss here. I am not so familiar with the heritage of K95. Were they a bigger player in the past? Just curious because in my admittedly limited exposure to Columbus radio I can't ever remember them being a top of mind station.

K95 was the first FM country Music station in Columbus and untill WCOL entered the format a major player. and now that they have the 94.1 signal downtown they have a good shot at going up against that 10.5 that WCOL just posted 6+ in December.

I'm not a country Music fan but when I first visited Columbus in 1992, I was sure impressed with the K95 logo and branding.

This jogged my memory:

Columbus Dispatch, The (OH) - January 10, 2007

One station widens range, another turns country

The format shifts continue in Columbus radio. The latest affect WHOK (95.5 FM) and WAZU (107.1 FM), both owned by Wilks Broadcasting Columbus. As of yesterday, WHOK remains country but with a new face -- as the Hawk, "playing everything country," according to the station management, instead of just "country legends."The format spans five decades of music by acts such as Alabama, Garth Brooks and George Strait....

This makes me wonder why Wilks Broadcasting Columbus didn't want to challenge WCOL when they took over K95 in 2007? Is it because of the stronger rating WCOL now has? Don't recall WCOL having that high of a rating in 2007.

As far as 107.1 goes, they may also change formats to Jazz or Talk.

Did they beat WMNI? MNI started in the fall of 65.

At the time WCOL entered the country music field we had K95.5 a rimshot, 98.9 the river with a downtown signal but 3000 watts, and T100 another rimshot. WHOK dominated the country scene when WCOL was playing oldies. Nationwide saw the success they had in Cleveland with WGAR and since WCOL had a strong signal went after the country audience. 98.9 the river took the biggest hit with the switch of WCOL to country.

I vote for oldies/classic hits on ;) 107.1

We don't need another classic hits station in this market. Look for a transition or a flip to something like AC or CHR.

My best guess is Jazz, Talk or Classic Country. There are only my best guesses and only guesses.

Would be surprised if they went AC or CHR. Unless they want to provide the south side with a Hot AC station, that may make some sense.

Nationwide's first big success in country on FM was WPOC in Baltimore, an acquisition they made in the early/mid 70's

"Progressive Talk 107.1" -- :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I could be wrong, but not only was WHOK Columbus' first FM country station, but I think I remember hearing them back in the day say that they were "Ohio's first country station." I know WPAY in Portsmouth came on in 1933 on the AM dial and played country. WPAY-FM took over the country music sometime in the 60's and assigned News/Talk to the AM. Anyway, I swear I remember WHOK including that in their branding.

I think 98.9 was only 800 watts until the change by Jacor to Channel Z in 1997. They lowered the height and upped the ERP giving Jack the signal it has now.

Not sure why folks are assuming Wilks won't keep 107.1 some shade of country.  It' s already differentiated by playing nothing but new country, which I doubt will be K95's stance.  Or, maybe they'll shift the classic country position to 107.1.
