classic country on AM

Can't totally answer your question concerning the number of markets. But 650 WSM is certainly the best with classic country. KWKH in Shreveport is also very good.

WSM runs a liner that says "This music sounds better on AM, because it was created for AM"

Lash forgets an important station: 930AM WWON :D

Anything sounds better on FM, but listening to Professor Eddie Stubbs on WSM is priceless. And most classic country sounds pretty good on AM.

I've been listening to a classic country station on 1130 lately, and have been impressed with the sound quality. Don't know the calls or any brand because I haven't listened long enough to catch any IDs.

It almost has to be KWKH since so many of the other stations on 1130 shut down at night.

Classic country that was recorded in mono should stay on AM.

However, the other argument may be that the fm signal carrying classic country may be a weak signal to begin with.
As a result, they are not broadcasting in stereo.
This better serves as a stronger FM signal, even if it might have an AM quality to it.

KFTI Classic Country 1070 Wichita. That may change before too many more years pass, since Journal Broadcast Group also has a new classic country on FM in that market.

hank sr sounds better on am. because his voice was so high pitched with no processing it hurts your ears on fm. or on cd for that matter. no radio station anywhere is better than wsm. i was upset when sirius dropped it. sometimes it comes in clear here. but for the most part it doesnt.

I think the way most people hear the music is the way they rather remember it. I've been listening to country since the 1970s and still try to go out of my way to hear new country on AM occasionally to see how it sounds in low fidelity AM but I agree with most posters in that a good classic country station on AM will beat a bad FM hands down IMO

BTW I'm like most here in the south, I regularly listen to WSM and KWKH with the latter being my favorite even since their radio ranch days (I've been listening to KWKH since the late 1980s, WSM only in the past 5 or so due to a local radio station on 640am)

RFLA

There's nothing like listening to WSM LATE at night while driving thru Podunkville USA. They seem to have a great mix of music and the music may not have the clarity of FM but to some it's not about the sound, it's about the music.

How about Classic Country on FM-HD?

I just bought a HD tuner and I discovered songs that I hadn't heard in a long time! I have been listening to Country since the '60's but not steady. I'm not a big fan of todays Country with a few exceptions. It was nice to hear some of the old songs I had forgotten about.

Most of the songs were from the '70's but I did hear some '60's as well.

HD Radio just might work out after all......

I just hope that KWKH stays country after CC 'unloads' them. I was happy to see that they had a boost in the last Arbitrend.

It's too bad that 650 doesn't propagate better around the Washington D.C area.

I think that country might make a good format during the evenings as well as overnight hours on a few more clear channel stations. In addition, these stations might want to offer travelers' information to go along with it.

Sometimes when you're in a car at 3AM out in the middle of nowhere a station like WSM is a pretty good choice because it's not about how a station sounds, it's what the play that really matters.

Would that be:
KWKH Shreveport, LA or KBMR Bismarck, ND?
Those are classic country stations on 1130 that I know of.

If you're listening at night and catching KBMR, I'd love to know where you are!!

It seemed like in the mid-late 90's several high-power AM stations would run a country/classic country syndicated format for truckers, with traffic information and other truck-specific features along with country music. I think WJR Detroit may have done it, maybe WHAS Louisville and WBAP Fort Worth? Am not sure if this is still being done.

In Odessa, Texas a formerly sports AM station changed to ABC's "Real Country" and I have enjoyed listening to it...it seems like country/classic country is the one music format that still works on AM....most places in Texas you drive to, you can still hear country on AM.

Nipper-

I believe if WJR or WHAS ever had any overnight truckers' shows featuring country music, they're no longer doing it.

Is there a list of affiliates for "Real Country" and other affiliates?

WLW "The Big One" in Cincy still runs classic country overnights. Aside from 1130, 700 and WSM, I don't know of any other power house AM stations.

There are a LOT of Real Country affiliates. I'm not aware of any public list, but I think ABC claims nearly 150 affiliates. I know of three in Texas, two in New York, three in Indiana, two in Iowa, one in the Portland, OR area, used to be one in Sacramento...

I might be wrong but I think I heard classic country at nite (from Fla) on 1130 Shreveport, it is one of the few 'clears" in SW Fla.
