Classic Country Star Eddy Arnold Dies

The AP is reporting that Eddy Arnold has died in Nashviille, a few days short of his 90th birthday.

Sorry to learn of this. Even as far back as the 1940's, he had what are called "cross-over hits" with country/western records that were heard on "pop" radio stations and purchased by those who might not buy a C & W record. RIP.

A true legend. It could be argued that Red Foley and Gene Autry were country's first true crooners, but Eddy took that style to the next level and beyond. And watching him sing, he was one of those who seemed to do it effortlessly. We'll never see another like him, again.

Later today Westwood One will offer a 20 minute special on Eddy Arnold. It is inventory free with no charge to run it. It is up for grabs to any single station in every market. It is good through his birthday, which is next Thursday. I know this is a shameless plug, but it is free, timely and well produced.

Donny Walker will have the info-

I still remember when on an awards show, he got some lifetime achievement award and he cried because he didn't want to be honored. He just wanted to make good music.

I listen to a couple of stations that play his crossover music. One was standards but kept their collection when they switched to classic country. They don't play a lot of pre-1970 country that isn't crossover.

The other is still standards.
