Classic FM Bandscan from Lorain - 1993

Just to compare what the radio dial brought us in 1993 as compared to today, these are the stations I can remember picking up on my home stereo back in 1993 in Lorain (between 92MHz and 108MHz)

92.3 WJMO 'Jammin '92' (Top-40/CHR)
93.1 WZAK (Urban AC)
93.7 WQIO/Mt. Vernon '93Q' (CHR)
93.9 CKLW from Windsor (Oldies)
94.1 'The New 94.1 HBC-FM' (AC from Canton)
94.5 'Toledo's X-94.5' (Classic Rock)
94.9 'Mix 94.9' (This was a CHR station from Akron then they flipped to country later that year still calling themselves Mix 94.9)
95.3 WLKR/Norwalk, OH
95.5 WCLV (Classical)
96.5 '96 FM WKDD' (CHR from Akron)
97.5 WONE/Akron (Rock)
97.7 WGGN/Castalia (Christian)
98.1 WTOF/Canton (Christian)
98.5 WNCX (Classic Rock)
99.1 WFRO/Fremont (AC)
99.5 WGAR (Country)
99.9 WKKO/Toledo (Country)
100.1 WSWR/Shelby, OH 'Wizard 100' was the station name at the time IIRC playing Oldies
100.7 WMMS 'The Buzzard 100.7' (Rock)
100.9 WNCG/Clyde, OH 'Gold 101' (Oldies)
101.3 WNCO/Ashland (Country)
101.5 WLQR/Toledo 'Soft Rock 101.5 WLQR' which would later change its name to '101.5 the River' (AC)
102.1 WDOK 'Soft Hits 102.1 WDOK' is the slogan they used IIRC with Nancy Alden 'Cleveland's Lady in Red' at night
102.7 WCPZ/Sandusky '102.7 FM WCPZ' and 'The Fun Point' (CHR)
103.3 WCRF (Christian)
103.7 WTTF/Tiffin (Oldies/AC)
104.1 WQAL 'Cleveland's Q104' (CHR) Home of 'Friday Night 80s' and 'Saturday Night Fever'
104.5 WQKT/Wooster (Country)
104.7 WIOT/Toledo (AOR) Although they were throwing in some active rock at the time
104.9 WZLE/Lorain (Christian)
105.3 WYHT/Mansfield 'Y-105' (CHR)
105.7 WMJI 'Majic 105.7 Good Times Great Oldies' (50s 60s and very early 70s only)
106.1 WVNO/Mansfield 'Lite Rock 106 VNO' (AC) I remember hearing 'This is Greg Campbell with another custom CD music mix' on this station
106.5 WLTF 'Lite Rock 106 1/2' (AC) Trapper Jack in the mornings and 'Love Light Live' in the evenings. Also remember '70s Sunday night'
107.3 WNWV 'Cleveland's Cool FM - 107.3 WNWV'
107.9 WENZ '107.9 the End' (Alternative)

I had a 70s analog tuner with an antenna in the attic and so I was able to fine tune stations like 100.9 and 104.7 and eliminate adjacent-channel interference

Anyone else have a Cleveland area classic FM bandscan they would like to share?

That is a cool list of what stations were back then. What a cool radio you must had back then. I think back in 1993, WZJM was Rhythmic/Dance Top 40, WZAK was Hip-Hop mixed in with R&B (it was the only option for urban radio not counting WZJM), WDOK was "Soft Favorites" (I've seen commercials from '93 with that slogan), and WQAL was Hot AC.

Otherwise, it was a good year for radio.

92.3 at the time was still WJMO-FM. Because of the flap revolving around the sale of WJMO AM and FM to Zebra Broadcasting (controlled by key employees of WZAK), the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (which protested the sale) was given operating control of WJMO/1490, and to avoid confusion, WJMO-FM's calls became WZJM.

WZAK was a VERY interesting station at the time. It was - along with WJMO - the main urban radio station in Cleveland. But was also most notable because Lynn Tolliver completely discouraged the playing of any "gangsta rap" tracks on WZAK, basically having it as a traditional urban contemporary format. When Radio One blew up WENZ for "Kiss/Z107.9," that was the first time the actual mainstream urban format was being carried on the market on a full-time basis.

WNWV was still known as "107.3 WNWV" at the time... it became "The Wave" again when a licensing agreement was set up with Infinity Broadcasting, IIRC, then the rights holder to the "Wave" name via KTWV/Los Angeles. (The initial licensing agreement was in 1987 with KTWV's first owner, MetroMedia.)

Interesting how the dial evolves over time. Ive made several trips to Vermillion the last couple of years. Were any of the 80-90s not in place by then?
