Classic hip-hop on urban AC...thoughts?

There's a story at the top of the page about KRNB Dallas playing some classic hip-hop songs. I really don't think this is a bad idea at all. The younger end of the target audience grew up on rap. Surely, urban AC is and should be the home to artists like Anita Baker, Luther Vandross and Gerald Levert (RIP to both Luther and Gerald), but I do think the format could use a little freshening up. Just as adult contemporary is having to evolve, so should urban AC.

I think its a great idea. Even here on the westcoast Clear Channel Rhythmic AC's are playing Hip Hop. The most I hear is Rob Base and others . Alot of stuff Mainstream Urban doesnt even touch today

Honestly, I don't think this is going to take off. More than likely any Urban AC that plays Classic Hip-Hop will only do so on weekends. It would be great if Urban AC dayparted the hip-hop songs for morning and afternoon drive. Forgot those dayparts are covered by Joyner, Harvey. Biasden and Doug & DeDe nationwide.

If one major company like CBS or Clear Channel would give it shot theres hope. But honestly Los Angeles and New York are the only 2 markets I can see supporting a full blown Classic Hip Hop station. One reason why KDAY works in Los Angeles is because of its roots and the station branding. And since there's no Mainstream Urban in that market it works fine. From what I hear on Urban AC those Hip Hop tracks were crossover hits not really deep cuts. Most I hear is Tupac, Biggie, Puffy, and a few others. And since most large black markets have 2 Urban AC's its okay to mix it up. One offering a more upbeat mix. From what I notice in St. Louis MO since KATZ dropped its Urban format KMJM has been more Hip Hop friendly and WFUN has tweaked back to a traditional Urban AC.

Does KJLH here in L.A. count? KJLH will play Digital Underground's hits Kiss You Back, The Humpy Dance, Total Featuring Notorious B.I.G. Can't You See, Notorious B.I.G.'s Juicy, One More Chance/Stay With Me Remix With Faith Evans and Mary J. Bilge during certain day parts during the week and during Radio Free Top 23 Count Down on Saturdays. KJLH plays more current rap though.

KJLH is more Urban Contempary now but it still heavily leans Urban AC so I would say yes it counts. Both formats are mostly the same to me.

I twould be nice to see the big guys put Classic Hip-Hop on HD channels so they could end up on FM translators.

Last Friday, KRNB did a lunchtime mix of 90's hip hop. It was nice to hear. Something different. Now if they would just do that for the 5 O'Clock mix instead of all the jammin' oldies that doesn't fit the current format of KRNB.

This prediction about Urban AC being more accepting of hip hop in general goes back to the early 2000's when a few Urban AC's such as KJLH Los Angeles and WRKS New York were playing Erick Sermon's 2001 smash hit "Music" Featuring the late Marvin Gaye but eliminated Erick Sermon's rap section. A year later in 2002 we had numerous rap records show up at Urban AC's such as Wyclef Featuring Cludette Ortiz "Two Wrongs" which had saw heavy airplay on KJLH, Nelly Featuring Kelly Rowland was picked up by KJLH and latino targeted then Urban AC KHHT. LL Cool J's 2002 hits "Luv U Better" and "Paradise" Featuring Amerie" were played in prime time rotation at KHHT at that time. Might I add that KHHT played the heck out of NB Ridaz "Runaway" back in 2002 when it was current. Now those songs that I've mentioned are now over ten years old some stood the test of time, some didn't. Need I go on. These PD's know that's times have changed and know that some of their target audience grew up during the emergence of hip hop and now a days majority of their target audiences are in fact born in the 80's.

Lots of Urban AC stations also don't play the late90s/Early 2000s R&B songs. Artist like Lil Mo, Ruff Endz, Total, Case, 702 etc. This wan an era when R&B was upbeat and all over the nightclubs and dancefloors.

Same here Shawty I don't know an Urban AC station that would play Lil' Mo's 2001 "Superwoman" featuring Fabolous. KJLH Los Angeles would play 702's "Where My Girls At". KJLH played Ruff Endz "No More" back in 2000. I do here "Someone To Love You" on KJLH once in a while but unlike the rest of the urban ACs KJLH plays a jazz remix of "Someone To Love You" with Kim Wates playing his saxophone in the background. They played the original version when that song first came out back in 2002 though. I hear Total's "Can't You See" on KJLH during the day with Notorious B.I.G.'s rap verse. As for Case, KJLH will play "Missing You", "Happily Ever After" and "Faded Pictures" Featuring Joe. You just mentioned all of my favorite artists. Did anybody tell you that you have a great taste in music?

KMJM in St. Louis plays some of that stuff. Since Urban KATZ flipped years ago Majic has been Hip Hop friendly. Moslty during Tony Scott's afternoon show. Few weeks back I heard Missy "Get Ur Freak On and last Thursday I heard Jagged Edge Where The Party At w Nelly during the midday. I heard 702 Where My Girls At a few times. Majic still leans Urban AC but its sounds Urban Contempary.
