"CLASSIC HIP-HOP"

So, we all know classic hip-hop is a huge format hole in Urban radio. Urban AC plays R&B and classic soul while the Urbans play todays Hip-Hop and R&B. Nobody plays classic hip-hip nonstop. Well, out of all cities Phoenix, AZ has a "Classic Hip-Hop" FM station 92.7/99.3 THE BEAT. I absolutely love the playlist which is all hip-hop from the 90s and early 2000s. A little 80s is thrown in, but no R&B is played at all. I've heard a lean towards West Coast songs are played considerding Cali isn't too far. This is the perfect alternative to Urban AC, Urban and Rhythmics. Take a listen www.azthebeat.com

There's also KDAY 93.5 in LA - they play classic hip-hop.

They have some type of slow jams show, and looking at the recently played last night, they did play r&b during that. However, I did listen to the station for a few hours and it sound great, and outside of that one show looks like its all hip hop.

I haven't listen to them since they switched back to classic hip-hop. I think they are running 24/7 with no jocks.

I think Classic Hip-Hop's time has come. The genre has now been around long enough to have "classics". I see it growing in two ways. First, as a stand alone format. Second, as a compliment to current hip-hop and R&B formats. Let me explain the second one. I think an "Urban Hot AC" type of format may evolve, featuring a blend of current hip-hop, uptempo r&b and classic hip-hop. Demographically, it would target 25-44, in between Urban (12-34) and Urban AC (35-54). We are already seeing that happen with "Rhythmic Hot AC's" (e.g., WKTU); I think we will see it in the Urban space, too.

We had the "Hot Urban AC" format here in ATL with 97.1 JAMZ "Best Jamz from the 80s, 90s and Now." It was a Cox owned station that could've taken off, but no money nor jocks were ever put into station.

"Rapper's Delight" should be played on oldies stations. Seriously--with the '80s songs the format has found a way to mix in, it's time to give hip-hop its due as a part of the American soundtrack. You definitely couldn't put most classic jams on oldies stations--but the Sugar Hill Gang's most famous hit belongs.
