Classic Hits 93.1 flips to Christmas

Presumably Summit has done its homework, as Summit tends to do. I'm a little surprised it's in the direction of lighter classic rock, and WIMZ is the target, not WJXB. Jack (which WNOX may well have picked up if Midwest hadnt't gotten there first) probably put a monkeyt wrench into what the Classic Hits format may have been otherwise. Now you'll hear Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, the Bee Gees and Michael Jackson on Jack, not WNOX. Westwood One didn't seem all that researched, and seemed to be more one PDs version if what was good (good form music geeks, not so much everyon else).

106.1.....that station is so far off my radar screen I forget it exists. Does it have any ratings or profile in Knoxville? I see a TV spot now and then.

Remember, the Vice President of Summit, and also an investor, is Bill Tanner, one of the best muti-format programmers ever.

I'm not sure what realistic younger skewing formats are available, especially for Summit, which already has the heritage CHR (even if a bit hot A/C leaning), rhythmic CHR and a younger country format. Alternative or active rock on a full-market signal, maybe, as opposed to two now-illegally operating translators (since they signed the AM off).

Now what we need is a for some more younger scewing formats. Not talking about country. I mean like another Top 40 or a Hot AC to take some points from Star. B 97.5 sometimes does that but it still focuses on a lot of classics. If 106.1 would do a true Hot AC or go Top 40 that would be a good signal for it. I have no idea what they are trying to be.

Even though the Westwood One format was getting a little stale, the music mix was a little more tolerable than what I hear now. “Lighter Classic Rock” as you say, would be fine but they are still playing pop artists such as Prince and the Bangles. It’s like they can’t decide which direction to take. I was really hoping for a different approach. I just spent a week in Florida listening to two great ‘80s pop-based classic hits stations, Q105 and 105.9 Sunny FM. That’s what I wanted here. At this point I think Jack plays more ‘80s than WNOX. I won’t give up hope though. Since they are locally programmed now, they can still tinker with it. As it sounds now though, I can’t listen for very long.

As for 106.1, they used to show up near the bottom of the ratings back before the public numbers were subscriber only. Their Hot AC format is not very focused. We really could use a Soft AC here. B97.5 is getting away with having no competition since WNOX has moved in another direction.

I finally punched up the preset for 93.1 today and gave them a try, music does sound a little more Rock-40ish and that's OK. I was listening around noon to the mid-day girl they have doing the VT, she sounded OK. See can't pronounce a "W" correctly either. I am sorry to be critical about that but that is one of the first things that was hammered into me when I was in school, so it just irks me when I hear it on air these days. The liners and jingles that I heard are an improvement from the pre-christmas music version.
