Classic Hits in Chicago

Does Chicago really needs 3 classic hits station? Could one of the three classic hits station change their format to alternative or adult hits?

94.7 WLS-FM
100.3 REWIND-FM
104.3 K-HITS

94.7 could simulcast WLS 890, 104.3 could simulcast The Score if they were to change formats and do better in the money demos of 25 to 54 than they would with Alternative. 100.3 WILV-FM is doing great in 25 to 54 (no. 2 if I recall correctly) and will not be changing format. For Alternative, I'd recommend Q101.com, or if you can tolerate the repetition, Q87.7. IMO, the web is the best place to find good Alternative Music stations.

I don't see where simulcasting AM 890 would help WLS-FM in the demos.

Most of the under 35 crowd doesn't listen to AM. Putting it on FM immediately gives it visibility with them. However, I don't see it happening in the near term. The classic hits format of WLS-FM is about the only thing that's done well on 94.7 in years.

94.7 is doing just fine now, but never under estimate Cumulus' ability to mess up a good thing.

Talk can be found anywhere in local markets.
94.7 is fine, but only serves a tiny little market area.
Putting the classic hits on 890 would provide something useful and different to a much wider area.

Yeah, real tiny. It's called the Chicago Metro Survey Area. It's the third largest metro in the USA.

Putting the classic hits on 890 would provide something useful and different to a much wider area.

Large advertisers and agencies don't buy much, if anything, outside each individual metro. There is absolutely no gain in putting the WLS-FM format on AM... it would get just about zero under-60 listeners and lose money like mad.

Yes the area served by FM is tiny compared to the coverage of a "real" radio station.

When I moved to the N side of Chicago, I still listened to an Indiana AM 250 watt daytimer 60 miles away.
No FM signals from that area make it that far, so I'm still convinced that AM does the best job of serving a wide area.
If people choose to create so much rf interference that they destroy the usefulness of radio, it's no skin off my back.

If FM is better because it serves a smaller audience and area, then of course iboc is an improvement, because it works in an
even smaller area.

It would follow that the best radio method of all would be the one with the least coverage and therefore, the best
defined market.

I think what is needed is a wire, and not radio at all.
