Classic Hits IS oldies

To all who read and submit posts to this board, is there a successful CLASSIC HITS station in the country that plays a true variety of hits, meaning any & all of the songs that charted during the time span they're targeting? By the way, Classic Hits IS an oldies format.

Classic Hits=Lite Classic Rock.

WDRV/WWDV Chicago/Milwaukee area "The Drive" is what you are describing.

I remember in the mid eighties, Classic Hits 100.7 WZLX Boston. They had a wonderful mix of music.

Agreed. It's only an "oldies" format in the sense that all the songs they play are old. By that definition Classic Rock is also oldies. Any Classic Hits station I've ever heard is mostly female-friendly classic rock tunes with a few pop hits (Elton John, Billy Joel, Meatloaf) thrown in.

Classic Hits

You're correct that Classic Hits is a "classic rock lite" format.

But, as the original poster asked, we're looking for a SUCCESSFUL (=ratings and revenue success) example of an Oldies station that plays ALL THE CHART HITS from it's target era.

As I suspected, there is no such animal. Successful library-based formats (Oldies, Classic Rock/Hits, Variety Hits) all play a selection of major hits (by their listeners' standards TODAY)- they do not (not even V.H.) literally play everything that made the charts during "back in the day".

How does WDRV/WWDV do in the ratings with that format?

And no R&B at all, much like your typical classic rock station.

If by "all of the songs that charted" you're looking for Led Zep to Manilow and country to disco, The Drive isn't what you're looking for.

By the way, what do you think of The Track?

Memphis had a decent classic hits station....98.1 the Cat, with Rich Brother Robbin as PD/afternoon drive jock...the jocks sounded really good but the music got old really fast (how many times a day do you need to hear Elton John and Chicago?) which got blown up and turned into 98.1 the Max, a rock station that mixes classic rock, new rock, and a little R&B! (You might hear Three Doors Down into Skynryd into Aretha into Skid Row!)

They do pretty decent overall. I would certainly call them a success.

As a Chicago area native, I happen to be a frequent listener to the station. I can't say they play the variety of hits you're speaking of, but their playlist is impressive. It includes plenty of hits plus "classics". They probably center in the early 70's but include stuff from the mid 60's into the late 80's.

Muddy signal. Dull format.

Was through Indy yesterday..heard a jock on The Track talking about being live and local. Sounded like it might have been the first day of jocks on the air, but I'm not sure. As far as Classic Hits being oldies, not in my experience. Worked at one that was nostly Classic Rock lite..this was around 1990 and I think there was some residual "don't say rock or we'll scare the clients" mentality. We might play a touch of Motown, but never, never Manilow, Country crossover, Disco or anything like that. <P ID="signature">______________

You're kind of right, but Classic Hits is basically a lighter classic rock type of station that may mix in some music heard on oldies stations. Oldies stations lean more to play disco music, Barry White, Rupert Holmes, Beach Boys, Mary Wells etc, while on a Classic Hits staion you hear Jim Croce, Boston, Elton John, J. Geils Band, Led Zepplin, or Aerosmith. That type of music. The more "fluffy" stuff is on oldies stations, even though they do play music heard on Classic Hits stations.

Is that the same Willy B that was part of 10 Q in LA?

And "Wolf"...I'm surprised. I thought you'd like the R&B lean.

That depends on where you're listening. WROR Boston plays a few major 60's/70's soul and R&B hits, probably to help make them more competitive against Oldies station WODS (especially while WODS is all Christmas for another week).

WROR

But is WROR Classic Hits? Well if they do play R&B hits, they are a very rare exception. Very interesting though. Does this work out well for WROR?

Re: WROR

It's been working great for them. It's a very select few of the "biggies" they play that could be considered R&B oldies (I Heard It Thru The Grapevine, a few of the no-brainers like that). They have a really good sounding mix but are definitely Classic Hits.

Sounds good. I'm very surprised I don't recall this station because I've been through Boston quite a few times.

Re: WROR

They're registered as Classic Hits with Arbitron, Radio-Locator, etc...

They don't actually say it on the air anymore though, I'm guessing perhaps to avoid ratings diary confusion with Classic Rock WZLX. Their positioner is "The Songs You Grew Up With".

It kind of sounds like Gold AC or something like that with Classic Hits thrown in. Interesting station.
