102.7 is doing a classic hits weekend. Is this aiming at a full shift from oldies to classic hits???

Funny you should mention this. Was out to dinner earlier this evening, and Majic was on at the restaurant. I didn't hear any song that suprised me except 10cc's "The Things We Do For Love." Every other song in that hour and a half I heard was your standard every day song you expect to hear on Majic. Music stations do "theme" weekends - some every weekend, some sometimes. These "themes" serve two purposes - one is to present the same music with a different twist, sometimes it gives a station an opportunity to add a little variety. In this case, especially with the "Jack" format in vogue, EVERYBODY is really hitting hard the "variety" line. Despite what's happening to "oldies" formated stations across the country, Majic remains one of the most successful and IMHO, this weekend theme does NOT signify a shift.

Yes, and a switch to classic hits or "Jack" type format would probably slaughter Big 105-9...so...that's not in the forseeable future

Plus, I would consider Big 105-9 a *bit* Classic Hits formatted...a tad bit lighter than most Classic Rockers

They'd be more apt to flip to JACK than Big...CC hasn't jumped on that bandwagon as much as others. Also, flipping to JACK would mean firing their entire staff, which would be great for BIG, no jocks and JACK becomes just as repititious as anything else after the "shine" wears off. They're realizing that Oldies is slowly dying along with their audience. How many Big Band stations are out there?

CC owns Big; Jeff-Pilot calls the shots at Majic.

I personally can't think of ANY reason Majic would not do something that could "slaughter" the competition. However, I happen to be a big oldies fan, and hope that the trend of Oldies stations disappearing in major and large markets eases up a bit. Besides, I've been following the trends of a NUMBER of different markets, both large and small, and the numbers for Oldies stations in those markets have shown a nice bump.

Maybe it takes a couple of high profile flips for fans of the format to rally. Who knows?

Magic is doing great - going against the grain of fate that many other oldies stations are experiencing - if you are waiting for them to change formats, don't hold your breath.

Across the country, many former Oldies stations are morphing into Classic Hits stations. Unfortunately, this move has been largely advertiser-driven, as the aging demos that listen to Oldies do not spend as much as their younger counterparts. With that said, I do not think Majic is ready to dump Oldies, especially for Classic Hits. Miami has a successful Classic Rocker in Big, and Classic Hits is too similar a format to really compete. Majic does well, and the only change I can really fathom is a radical one - to Jack.

Magic 102.7

WMXJ's era center is around 1967- older than most Oldies stations today.
Many are centered at around 1969.

and they still do pretty well. I think one reason why Magic will likely be around for a while is that South Florida is a big retirement community. That MIGHT have something to do with it. <P ID="signature">______________
