Classic Old Gold 77 KXA Commercial

Have seen a bunch of "home grown" TV spots on YouTube lately ... and makes me long for the days when radio still hired a bunch of creative people internally. Phoenix one has a person waking up and the entire morning crew stepping through the bedroom to start their day. This KXA one very good too. Now everyone "buys" the same campaigns all pimped from music videos. Another good one was Copacino's series for the mountain ... remember the prisoner help captive in a room and was ONLY focused on changing the radio station?? Good stuff!

Over the years one thing is consistent, radio stations have the most low-budget TV ads. It doesn't matter what market or era, radio always have the amateurish, cheaply produced spots.

Well...as I recall it, attempts were made at sophistication throughout the '80s on some Seattle radio station TV ads and to the stations themselves. Remember it was suddenly time to sound all grown up and yuppie? Remember "Quality Rock" KZOK? "Quality Hits" KQ-96? "Gourmet Rock" KEZX? "The Music Magazine" KPLZ? "KIXI Light". Those yuppies gushing about KNUA? And NO radio station in Seattle in the '80s was working harder to shed any listener under 35 more than KJR-AM......)

Those commercials look ESPECIALLY cheesy today......

Actually I was commenting on the production quality or lack thereof. I wasn't speaking about catch phrases or positioning statements also used on the air.

Even today radio typically uses formula or template TV spots such as the one used by adult hit stations like KRWM. Cheesy animation that looks like it was created on some kids basement PC not fit for YouTube let alone paying to put it on TV in the local market. And there's a reason most radio personalities should stay away from cameras. A face for radio holds true in 90% of the cases. And that KJR-FM TV spot? Could they get more ugly and non-photogenic people with Seattle in the background?

Now having to deal with promotions budgets all the time, I'm aware that stations need to stretch their budget by going for more reach so they cut corners on the spot quality. It's a trade off. But in these days of YouTube and passing TV spots around in a viral manner, I submit spending money on producing a quality, well thought out and creatively produced TV spot may have a better impact over the long haul. Start by spending a little more on real actors and not using office staffers or ugly air talent.

You mean that Stewie Griffin-headed alien chick on those KRWM ads a few years back? I remember that one and seen it before in other markets......

But you have to remember that's what KRWM listeners LOOK LIKE anyway......

And that would be the "Right Reverend Bobby Ryan" (later of Ryan & Ryan on KBSG) up there on the podium saving your soul! Last I heard Bobby, who is a very good guy, was selling real estate in Renton. Hope he's doing well...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65_JF_msyUg NOT WORK SAFE parody! Also, Bonneville used this for their FM100.3 in Salt Lake City and "Love FM" 100.3 in Chicago. However, they were using a slightly different commercial.

Edit, here is the one that "FM100" and "Love" used. Apparently 100.3 is a popular adult contemporary frequency?!?

Now that I think of it, I've never heard a station at 100.3 that WASN'T an adult contemporary station. Add Des Moines Iowa, Chicago and Ottawa Ontario to the list of stations that run AC on 100.3

Well, the one I am listening to at my house right now just NE of Seattle isn't AC...but then it's in Canada, so maybe it's Metric AC.

Metric AC I always thought was one song longer than your average American AC station's music sweep.....

However, Mimo did illustrate a possible overlooked fact: While 100.3 KQLZ (Pirate Radio) L.A. was Active Rock. It's successor today is AAA after years of urban. Country rules on KWIQ-FM Moses Lake and always has since day one. There's a talk station in Minneapolis on 100.3. CHR on 100.3 KKRZ in Portland, WHTZ in New York, etc. And CKKQ in Victoria, BC is Adult Rock (not much on the thrash end, but not too AAA either...) But just about everybody else on 100.3 MHz IS AC.....Or so it seems for one reason or another......
