Classic rock in Rhode Island

Although 94 HJY plays some classic rock, it's great to know there are three other stations that cover almost all of Rhode Island with a decent signal.

100.1 The Pike, WWFX, in northwest RI
100.7 WZLX in most of northern RI, Providence, and central RI.
102.3 The Wolf, WMOS, in southern RI.

WZLX is true classic rock. I haven't heard The Wolf in a while but they appear to be also. The Pike is another B101 but at least they have actual local drive time jocks with Bruce Palmer and Frank Foley. Actually I may be wrong about The Pike. I just checked some hourly music on their website and they may play more actual classic rock than B101.

103.7 WRX was such a good station. The jocks were good. It was programmed well. I wish they had survived. This town needs an alternative to HJY. There really isn't one.

I would argue that the Pike's signal is good only north of Providence. It is a tough catch in much of Kent, Washington, Bristol, and Newport Counties.

Agreed. 103.7 WRX was a good station. WZLX does a good job though.

ZLX is very good. Their playlist opens up at night. And on the weekends as well! I'm finding 103.3 WODS becoming very predictible(with the music, especially on weekends) except with Barry Scott & his 'Lost 45's' show. Btw, speaking of Barry. He has been popping up on Saturday nights. And filling in during the week..

103.7 WRX was owned by Clear Channel before Clear Channel was the behemoth it is today (which of course isn't as big as it used to be). They were forced to spin off WRX following CC's merger with AM-FM. Now suppose for a minute the station didn't have to get spun off and was still around under Clear Channel's ownership. Common sense tells me that if it was still around and owned by Clear Channel it would be a shadow of its former self like so many other CC stations i.e. KISS 95.7 in Hartford. Now they're ruining KC-101.3 in New Haven. (And KC 101.3 like WRX was owned by Clear Channel before they were the behemoth it is today). KC-101.3 is dropping their local morning show to go with the syndicated Elvis Druan starting tomorrow.

well thats not a shock since there near nyc like his other affiliates one day he will be heard in boston on kiss when matty is gone

MarcB, thanks for info about Elvis Duran coming to KC-101. I hope that Clear Channel did not send longtime Connecticut jock Michael Maze to the beach. Does anyone have any info on that?

100.1 The Pike can be heard best in Northwest Providence County. 102.3 The Wolf can be heard in Washington County (South County), western Kent County, and some of Newport County. 100.7 WZLX has the biggest coverage area in RI, including most of Providence County, the city of Providence, eastern Kent County, Bristol County, and some of Newport County.

I think the WWRX many of us are thinking of is pre Clear Channel, when it was owned by the Urso family. Can't remember all the jocks from back then, but I remember Mike Montecalvo did morning news and Amy Hagen and Brent Peterson were DJ's. The station wasn't bad when Clear Channel owned them, but I thought the music selection was better under the previous ownership. I definitely miss WWRX being on the air in Providence...

After Imus hosted by Mike Montecalvo, it was Rick O.B. middays, followed by Jaxon and the Phamacist. The Pharmacist is now doing traffic reporting for Gem Plumbing.

That was much later on during the clear channel ownership - Rick O.B was one of the few holdovers from when Urso sold the station to CC. I can't remember who did AM drive on WWRX before Imus was there.

Not to hijack the original topic, but Cat Country is smart enough to portray Brian as a station personality even though he works for Gem. He plays an active role in the Morning Showgram and makes personal appearances at station events. I'm sure he gets a lot of creative satisfaction. Good move. If you have the talent at your disposal, flaunt them. I'm glad some people who are the cream of Providence radio stuck with it through rough times and it paid off.

See musically, I really like WHJY. I like the mix of some current stuff with the classic rock. For my own personal tastes it somehow works.
