Classic Rock on AC Stations

Realizing that so many AC stations have Rock and Alternative, it got me thinking. Are there any AC stations that also play Classic Rock songs or Deep Tracks? Songs from bands like The Who, Foreigner, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, KISS, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Queen, etc.

Foreigner had some pretty big AC hits:
-"Waiting For a Girl Like You"
-"I Want to Know What Love Is"
-"I Don't Want to Live Without You"
(Does anyone remember an AC hit that Foreigner had in '95 called "Until the End of Time"? We only heard that song for a few months but I absolutely LOVE that song. I wish I could hear it on the radio.)

Bruce Springsteen did as well:
-"Hungry Heart"
-"Dancing in the Dark"
-"Glory Days"
-"My Hometown"
(I do wish I'd hear "Streets of Philadelphia" on AC stations these days though.)

I believe I've heard "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones on AC stations fairly recently.

Generally speaking, these artists are played on Classic Rock, Classic Hits, and Greatest Hits (formerly Oldies) stations.

Other than the Who, all the artists you mentioned scored A/C hits back in the 70s or 80s. Actually, from an "A/C" chart perspective, the Rolling Stones biggest charted song was "As Tears Go By", which got to #10 on what was known as the Billboard "Easy Listening" chart back in 1968.

A/C is a "female" targeted format and with a few exceptions, most of the songs mentioned by the artists above don't score well in music research.

Twenty years ago, when they were still supposedly playing Barry Manilow and The Carpenters, one AC station where I live was playing "I Can See for Miles" by The Who. Also "Witchy Woman" by The Eagles. Neither would seem strange now.

Foreigner was mentioned and most of the ACs now seem to be playing "Urgent".

Over the weekend, I heard "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" on that same station I mentioned, which during the day has been the more conservative of the two ACs. Since the station calling itself Lite has supposedly turned down the volume, and this station is more uptempo even during the day, I guess it's about even.

What station and market is this? Is there a strong Classic Hits or Greatest Hits station in the market? Or a strong Classic Rocker?

K-104.7. There is a classic rocker WRFX "The Fox" (seems to be doing well) and a station regarded as one of the best stations ever of its type. 95.7 the Ride, which isn't doing so well in the ratings partly because of the distance from Charlotte, which tries to be like album-oriented rock stations of the 70s and emphasizes progressive rock. There are even a few R & B tunes by black artists. But virtually no metal.

Charlotte had an oldies station on AM, and a distant oldies station FM. Both have switched. K-104.7 IS the greatest hits station.

I don't remember where I intended to post this, but K-104.7 played Elton John's "Daniel" the other night. You don't get much softer on today's AC. Someone had pointed out even though the harder stuff was being played, soft music was still there.

But the next song sounded to me like it belonged on hot AC. I didn't hear any lyrics that would be an obvious title. It was a female vocalist and I heard the words "Here I am, once again" and something about "protected".

I think you may be referring to "Behind These Hazel Eyes" by Kelly Clarkson. Her music definitely fits the Hot AC format, but she's had many singles that have become staples on mainstream AC stations, including this one.

I like Kelly Clarkson, I think she fits well on AC. She's had numerous AC hits:

A Moment Like This (#4, 2002)
Breakaway (#1 for months, 2005)
Because of You (#3, 2006)
Already Gone (#3, 2010)
as well as "Behind These Hazel Eyes" #13 2005, "Walk Away" #19 2006, "Since U Been Gone" #22 2005 (my personal favorite); all have become staples for AC, except maybe Walk Away.

Kelly, Carrie Underwood, and Daughtry are truly the stars who have made it from American Idol. David Cook is on his way as is Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.

Interesting Carrie is one of the favorite artists of Mainstream A/C women over the age of 40. Yet, she has had only one A/C hit in that Cheating song. Here's a case where programmers should be looking for material to play. Jesus Take The Wheel, Temporary Home, and All American Girl all would have worked. They tried crossing Cowboy Casanova but it didn't work. Undo It though may cross.

I hear "Jesus, Take The Wheel" frequently on both AC stations in Greenville, SC.

I wonder if David Cook will have any more big AC hits- his songs after "Time Of My Life" seemed to be edgier and didn't do too well for AC. Still, nothing can top Daughtry, Underwood, and Clarkson....I think they will always be the most successful 'Idols.' Some of the others have had some crossover success to AC, Elliott Yamin's "Wait For You", David Archuleta "Crush" and Jordin Sparks "Tattoo" all come to mind, but I don't hear them much anymore.

Yes, those were big hits. Jordan had a pretty successful duet with Chris Brown..No Air also. So far, Elliott & David A have been one hit wonders. I still think David Cook has a future ahead of him.

WVFM 106.5 in Kalamazoo, MI has a unique hybrid blend of AC and lighter classic rock.

www.wvfm.fm

Good example. I actually attended college in Kalamazoo for my undergrad and listened to WQLR 106.5 when it was "Q-Lite 106.5" and then just "Q 106.5". It was a good mainstream AC station during those times but then evolved into Hot AC in the early '00s. In '06, it switched from a Hot AC format to the Variety Hits format it is today.

According to Wikipedia, "Music on WVFM consists of classic hits and oldies from the 60s and 70s, 80s hits, and 90s to current Hot AC and some gold Soft AC. The station strives to play songs that haven't been heard on the radio in many years." My belief, however, is that it's kind of reverting back to a regular AC station that happens to throw in a few classic-rock-type oldies songs in every now and then.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I don't go to lyrics sites at home, with good reason.

Sorry I got off topic. I wondered how this topic deviated and now I know.

"Edge of Seventeen" seems to be a staple of K-104.7.

And "Go Your Own Way" was on the Muzak at my grocery store. Not really the sort of thing I want to hear there, but that's a whole other topic.

Getting back to this topic, I don't think I've ever heard a lot of true "classic rock" acts on AC such as the Stones, KISS, Led Zep, etc. The closest AC gets to classic rock is The Eagles, Eddie Money, Fleetwood Mac, Journey...all great acts that produced good "feel good" songs. I can't really think of any other classic rock acts that get significant airplay (except for a one-hit type, such as "More Than a Feeling"). Maybe Queen, Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Bob Seger but their songs that AC stations normally play really aren't that aggressive.

I think songs such as "Go Your Own Way", "Take It To The Limit", "Two Tickets To Paradise", etc. are fine for the AC format and fit in very well. Better than the disco, IMO.
