"Classic" Smooth Jazz?

After listening to some of the Breeze Network airchecks that had been posted here (THANKS AGAIN!) I'm reminded just how much more I liked the contemporary jazz recordings of the 80s and early 90s compared to what's out there today.

Does anyone know of a stream that is either heavy on smooth jazz gold, or one that focuses on it exclusively? Like many of you I'm upset by the turn the format has taken, and I want to go back to the sound of the "good old days." Where can I find it?

Any help at all is appreciated.

I'm with you. I am nostalgic for that era of smooth jazz too. XM 's "Watercolors" gives me that old school vibe once in awhile, but of course not often enough. But it's a decent start. Otherwise, you may want to seek out some more old airchecks.

WLOQ in Orlando has a show on Saturday night from 10pm to midnight with saxman Everette Harp called "Smooth Jazz Odyssey" that plays the stuff from the 70's and 80's. I've never heard the show but I know Everette's one of the good guys. I believe they once tried to syndicate it but I don't know where that stands now. You can find out more at www.wloq.com. Happy listening grooving to the oldies!

Yes. Old school smooth jazz radio is definitely the best. Thanks so much for uploading the Breeze airchecks. Some truly great music here. Most of which isn't even in print anymore, making it all the more unique.

I'm just sorry not many of the stations from this era are still around. With WNWV going all to hell these days, the only one I can think of from this era that is still holding out is KNIK. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Out of curiosity, how long did 97.1 in St. Louis stick with this format?
And, what did they flip to?

Unfortunately KNIK has, in many ways, jumped the shark the same way other stations in the format have. I remember as recently as 2003 they were still a fun listen, but it's largely degerated into the same mess the rest of the format seems to be in.

KLTH/St. Louis was sold and flipped to CHR/Rhythmic. IIRC it was only on The Breeze for a shade under two years.

Hey guys. Brand new to the forum. Stumbled across it when I was doing research on what happened to WQJZ's format.

I was introduced to contemporary jazz, thanks in large part to my older brother, in the 80s, so I know exactly what you guys are talking about. One of my first jazz CDs was The Rippingtons Tourist In Paradise (1989), which in my mind is still one of the best contemporary jazz CDs ever recorded. The early days of The Rippingtons, to include Russ Freeman's long lost solo release Nocturnal Playground (1985), sucked me into the genre for good. While I can't put a percentage on the amount of "classic" smooth jazz cuts I have in my regular rotation, I do have plenty of old school Rippingtons, Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Acoustic Alchemy, Special EFX, and Spyro Gyra just to name a few. Feel free to stop by at http://www.loudcity.com/stations/the-wav-smooth-jazz I can't promise you that you will like everything I play, but I think overall it is a decent mix of old school and new school.

Yeah I LOVE 80's and 90's Smooth Jazz. Early 00's were good, too.

So do I.

Try this for some nice flashbacks as well as great new cuts you won't hear anywhere else.

www.wavjazz.net.

You won't be disappointed.

And I suppose I should put in a plug for the TBA artists here. Tim Heintz and Frank Potenza are in the process of re-releasing their albums (on iTunes, Amazon and as CDs) and are both in the studio recording new material with Dr. George Shaw. The other artists are soon to have their material up as well.

Each page of the C22 site has a song from the TBA artists embedded in it. And if you click on the "artists" page you can hear :40 snippets of many of the songs. More will be online next week.

Incidentally, we are in the process of redesigning the home page with a lot of new material. Dr. George mentioned that he wants to do a promotional giveaway of some of the old albums. Apparently he has a few fresh, unopened LPs from the TBA era in his possession. So we're looking into packaging those as a promo or contest or something.

If you're in the Seal Beach, CA area, most of these guys play at Spaghettini.

In the meantime, check out the site and listen to some of the music from the "Quiet Storm" era.

Carmine:

Best of luck with this venture...I personally LOVED and have a lot of the TBA library from the late '80's and early '90's.

The stuff still sounds as fresh today as 20 years ago.

Good times. :)

Hey thanks, majaman78.

Give Dr. George a shout out. I know he'd love to hear from you. Go to the "Contact" page on the C22 site and you'll see his email address.
