Classic TV and film actor Peter Graves Dead at 83

One irony in Graves' death is that his one-season-only predecessor on Mission: Impossible, Steven Hill - who is probably better known for his decade-long role as the crusty D.A. on Law & Order - has outlived him.

I'm not clear why that's "ironic." It's not like Steven Hill left MI due to health problems. According to Wikipedia, the producers found Hill a bit difficult - first because he wouldn't work on the the Jewish sabbath, and because he would occasionally refuse to cooperate with plot elements he found ridiculous. Hill was considered a top notch actor in those days - he had studied acting with Brando, among others. He'd appeared in many first rate film and live TV dramas, and probably found MI a bit beneath him. In those days, episodic TV was still considered 'slumming' by many actors who preferred the stage and film, but needed the money.

We should note that Peter Graves' birth name was Peter Aurness. He was the younger brother of James Arness (Gunsmoke).

Before Mission Impossible, Graves also played a ranch owner and a father figure to adopted son Joey (Bobby Diamond) on the Saturday morning live action series "Fury" which aired on NBC throughout the 1950s up to reruns in the mid 60s.

He also appeared in the Australian-themed western series "Whiplash"

(always remember the kangaroos hopping in the series intro in the early 1960s..kinda campy but cool.)
