"Classic" TV DX PHOTOS

Wandering about in my attic, I found an old file box with TV DX photos taken in 1983. It's kinda retro, so I thought I would share. These pictures were taken in Pascagoula, MS, not far from Biloxi:

First is a tropo reception on channel 11. This is the classic Cuba Palm Tree TP, from Matanzas. It's around 630 miles.

Second, also on channel 11 is XHDH from Mérida, Yucatan. About 670 miles, straight south.

I have others, but these amuse me.

Cuba on ch 11 from Pascagoula? Wow what tropo! Or rare E-skip up to ch 11?

No. That was tropo.

I remember that opening. I got a handful of Cubans that day, all high-band VHF (including channel 13 under local WLOX).

The Mexican picture was taken a few days earlier, doubtless a product of the same system. Tropo over the Gulf can set in for days and days. Very cool stuff. I miss living down there.

I have always been fascinated by the Palm Tree pattern. Back then, it seems strangely exotic. I have a far better picture of the TP, taken on channel 2 via Es.

For anyone interested, a better view of the Cuban "Palm Tree" test pattern. This is via sporadic-E, likely on channel 2, which was wide open in Pascagoula.

Cuba used to run TPs well into the afternoon with Cuban radio on the aural side.
