Classic TV shows being regurgitated

NBC's fall line up includes Ironside. ::) Makes me wonder if the "suits" ever learn.

Years ago CBS aired "The Fugitive", with Tim Daly, which didn't last one season.

Correct me if I am wrong but there have also been a number of other 60s and 70's shows that were regurgitated but failed.

The Mod Squad- Cancelled
21 Jump Street- Cancelled

(If you know anymore please feel free to add to the list.)

Knight Rider - failed
Charlie's Angels - failed
Kojak (Vic Rhames) - failed
2003 Dragnet - failed
1973 Perry Mason - failed
Bionic Woman - failed
Fantasy Island - failed
The Love Boat - failed
Family Affair - failed
Dark Shadows - failed

The only "reboot" that seen any real success is "Hawaii 5-0".

These shows were never made into a revival series. "The Mod Squad" had a reunion TV movie in 1979 and a failed 1999 motion picture, but never a new TV series. Also, "21 Jump Street" was never remade as a TV series -- just a film that was released last year.

They tried to remake The Rockford Files a few years ago with Dermot Mulroney in the role made famous by James Garner but thankfully that project was killed. There have been a couple of incarnations of The Twilight Zone but none as successful or appealing as the original with Rod Serling.

Seems CBS had a little success when they dusted off "The Price Is Right" in the early 70s...As far as more recent game show remakes, "Million Dollar Password" had mixed results at best. Also, during the game show revival craze of the early 2000s, there was talk of bringing back "What's My Line?", an idea that apparently fizzled.

We can't forget "To Tell the Truth", which had versions in each decade from the 50s to the 2000s, in which Kitty Carlisle appeared in at least one show from each, thereby setting a milestone.

Too many game shows have been "regurgitated" to the point that one wonders why the original version was cancelled in the first place.....well, *I* wonder, anyway.

Also, among sitcoms, four words: The New Odd Couple. <ducking tomatoes>

Following "Game Show Marathon" on CBS in 2006, there was talk of reviving "Match Game" using the replica 1973-1977 set, for a new series for TBS -- it never was picked up.

And while the 1960s and 1970s versions with Gene Rayburn was quite successful, the later versions (1990 with Ross Schafer and 1998 with Michael Burger, plus the "Match Game / Hollywood Squares Hour" in 1983) were not.

How about five words? The New Love American Style. (Which apparently was so bad, it was not seen in my area.)

Let's not forget the two most successful game show "regurgitations" in recent history...."Wheel of Fortune", originally on NBC's Daytime schedule in the mid 1970's, and "Jeopardy", a fixture of NBC Daytime throughout the mid and late 1960's and into the early 1970's.

"Wheel", though, was never off the air for any time since its start in 1975, if you count both day & night versions. "Jeopardy" definitely was----twice.

As to "The New Love American Style," yah, not good....shot on videotape, to boot! Maybe to make it blend with soaps?

I guess fremantlemedia didn't think it would fly here in the states, but they licensed a re-make of Match Game for the Canadian television back in 2012. - I just recently became aware of this and I have yet to hear how successful it is/was.

My bad!

I honestly thought those two shows were on TV.

Another thought while I'm sitting here typing. Someone mentioned cop shows. Is it me or are most of the cop shows today following the same formula: Meaning male and female partners solving crimes with the assorted back-up staff.

And by the way why no westerns on TV anymore?

I was surprised to find out about the Canadian Match Game remake. I watched one episode, but the entire season is apparently on You Tube. I'll have to watch more before I comment on it, but the only person on the panel I recognized was Colin Mochrie. Is he a regular?

I almost forgot to include James Garner's 1981-1982 revival of Maverick "Bret Maverick" which in turn was inspired by the 1978 reunion TV movie "The New Maverick" with Garner and Jack Kelly reprising their roles.

As for why no new westerns on TV anymore? Probably not much of a demand for them as it once was when there were about 10 or more westerns on TV at the same time.

And Let's Make A Deal has had several failures in revivals, the 1980-1981 Canadian version, the 1990 daytime version and the 2003 NBC version which lasted all of 3 episodes. I don't really count the 1984-1986 revival as a failure since it was successful enough for that version to be syndicated in reruns on USA, Family Channel and GSN.

...

Maybe the horses objected?

10 or more Westerns is right-14 in 1957-58 and 20 in 58-59 with 27 in 59-60..down to 6 by my count in 1964-65..

And let us not forget that Match Game '73 on CBS was itself a revival (though I'll also accept "an expansion" as a description) of The Match Game, which ran on NBC from 1962-1969.

No...Colin is not a regular, but Debra DiGiovanni and Sean Cullen are.

Also, to answer the question of a previous poster....appparently, this new version of "The Match Game" did well enough in the ratings for Canada's "Comedy Network" to renew the show for a second season of 60 episodes. Production/taping of the show will be moving from Montreal to Toronto.

As that shows, Westerns had pretty much begun burning themselves out 50 years ago, so is it really a surprise we don't have them now?

To do one today, you'd have to find someplace new to go with the genre. And "Deadwood"'s been done.
