As we know, the majority of shows since the invention of TV have used New York or Los Angeles as a backdrop. But there have been a number of series in which the story line takes place in a city outside of New York or L.A. (or its suburbs such as Beverly Hills or New Rochelle) or in a distinct city or state. By memory, I have come up with a list of TV shows that have taken place outside of those two areas. Perhaps you can contribute some more. I'm not sure the location of some TV westerns such as The Rifleman, The Monroes or Wagon Train. I thought the Dukes of Hazzard's backdrop was Alabama, but the information I found said the stories took place in southern United States.

Anyway, here's what I came up with:

Alaska: Northern Exposure, The Alaskans

Arizona: Alice (Phoenix), Medium

California (aside from Los Angeles)
San Francisco: McMillan and Wife, Ironside, Streets of San Francisco, Monk, Full House
Sacramento: Eight Is Enough
San Diego: Simon and Simon

Colorado: Mork and Mindy (Boulder)

Connecticut: The Gilmore Girls

Florida
Miami: CSI: Miami, Miami Vice, The Golden Girls
Everglades: Gentle Ben

Georgia: Matlock, Designing Women (both Atlanta)

Hawaii: Hawaiian Eye, Hawaii Five-O, Magnum PI

Illinois: The Bob Newhart Show, Crime Story, Chicago Story, The Untouchables, Perfect Strangers, Chicago Hope, ER, First Edition, Married With Children (all in Chicago or the suburbs)

Indiana: One Day At A Time, Men Behaving Badly (Indianapolis), The Fugitive (Dr. Richard Kimble was from a fictional town called Stafford)

Iowa: Apple's Way (from the fictional Appleton, IA)

Maine: Murder She Wrote

Maryland: Homocide: Life On The Streets (Baltimore)

Massachusetts: The Practice, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, Crossing Jordan, Spenser For Hire, Boston Public, Cheers, Wings (Boston or near the city)

Michigan: Home Improvement (in or near Detroit)

Minnesota: Mary Tyler Moore (Minneapolis), Coach (if he coached for Minnesota State, then he was in Mankato), Little House On The Prairie

Mississippi: In The Heat Of The Night (fictional Sparta)

Missouri: The Robert Guillame Show (St. Louis)

Nevada: Bonanza (I think the Ponderosa was located here)

New Jersey: Toma

North Carolina: The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD

Ohio: The Drew Carey Show (Cleveland), Family Ties, WKRP in Cincinnati

Pennsylvania: Mr. Belvidere (Pittsburgh), The Tony Randall Show, Philly (both in Philadelphia)

Rhode Island: Providence

Texas: Dallas, Matt Houston, Walker Texas Ranger

Vermont: Newhart

Virginia: The Virginian

Washington: Frasier (Seattle)

Wisconsin: Laverne and Shirley, Happy Days (Milwaukee)

Good Topic: This is kind of off the beaten path, but Gary Burghoff starred in an unsold pilot, W*A*L*T*E*R that had Radar O'Reilly in his post Army career as a St. Louis Policeman in the Mid 1950's...

Coach/Minnesota State Univ.

> Coach was at the fictional Minnesota State before the
> univeristy (formerly Mankato State University) was so named.

For the record, Mankato State University became Minnesota State University-Mankato in 1998. There is also a Minnesota State University-Mooread that was formerly Moorehead State University. It also changed names in 1998.

Coach aired on ABC from 1989 to 1997.

I believe the New Dick Van Dyke Show was set in Phoenix too.
Wasn't Malcom In The Middle supposed to be set in Wisconsin? - Although the kids eat their school lunches outside.

The show was set in either Cave Creek or Carefree (they're adjacent towns north of Phoenix).

There was a reason why his character worked for a station called KXIV-TV: Van Dyke was the real-life owner of KXIV radio (now KSUN) in Phoenix at the time. He owned those call letters (you couldn't have a radio and a TV station with the same "base" call letters in different cities in those days).

> Wasn't Malcom In The Middle supposed to be set in Wisconsin?

Not sure about Malcom in the Middle, but That 70s Show was set in Wisconsin.

- Reba is set in Texas.
- Wasn't Hazzard county in Georgia?
- Roseanne is set in Illinois.
- It was revealed a couple of years ago that fictional Springfield (the Simpsons) is in Kentucky.
- And there's fictional Quahog, Rhode Island (Family Guy).

Believe it or not there was a BIG debate on this awhile back on sitcomsonline.com about this. Someone pointed out that they heard Vicki Lawrence say that Mama's Family was based in Raytown, Missouri which is a suberb of Kansas City. I think someone pointed that in an early episode of the show there is a scene of Mama driving a car with Missouri license plates.

I Married Joan: Lawrence, California

Dynasty: Denver

QueerAs Folk: Pittsburgh

The Waltons: Walton's Mountian, Virginia

Wow, I can't believe I actually have some shows nobody else has mentioned:

Hack and Cold Case, both set in Philadelphia

The District -- Washington, D.C.

Weird thing is, all of these are/were CBS shows, and I hardly ever watch CBS other than these shows!

I think that After MASH was set Hannibal, MO, which was Col. Potter's home town.

There was also a short run show called Filthy Rich, something like a Dallas spoof, that was set in Memphis.

> Connecticut: "Gilmore Girls"

Set in fictional Stars Hollow, supposedly in Fairfield County. Also, the recently departed "Judging Amy" was set in greater Hartford. The show's star, Amy Brenneman, was a graduate of Glastonbury High School (class of 1982).

On an unrelated note, "Family Guy" is also set in southern New England, more specifically, Rhode Island.

> - Wasn't Hazzard county in Georgia?

According to the IMDb, Warner Bros. actually shot the first five episodes of *The Dukes of Hazzard* in Georgia before the company moved production to its studio in Burbank, California. With that said, I think Hazzard County may have been inspired by a real county somewhere in Georgia.

> - It was revealed a couple of years ago that fictional
> Springfield (the Simpsons) is in Kentucky.

Again, according to the IMDb, the "Behind the Secnes" episode of *The Simpsons* has several different versions, each placing Springfield in a different state. One of those versions just happens to mark Kentucky as the state that contains Springfield. So far, the producers and writers of *The Simpsons* have been very apt at dodging the question of where Springfield would be if it were a real town.
______________

Spaeking of our Nation's Capitol:
"Scarecrow & Mrs. King"
"227"
"That's My Mama"
"Get Smart"
"Baby, I'm Back"
"The Six Million Dollar Man"
"Murphy Brown"
"FM"
"Capitol"

Then there's Virginia, where "A Different World" was set.

On The Simpsons, they sometimes mention Shelbyville, which is
in Kentucky; it was the home of Col. Sanders in his later years,
and also the birthplace of Martha Layne Collins, the state's
first woman governor. Of course, there are also Shelbyvilles
in Tennessee (home of the Tennessee Walking Horse) and Indiana.

BTW, there is no Hazzard County, Georgia, but there is a town
in Kentucky called Hazard (one "z") in Perry County; both are
named for Oliver Hazard Perry.

Did anyone mention Daniel Boone, which took place in the
general North Carolina/Tennessee/Kentucky area before the
American Revolution? Boonesborough was in Kentucky.

And before I forget, Boy Meets World took place in Philadelphia.

Soaps: The Bold And The Beautiful is set in Los Angeles. The
Young And The Restless takes place in Genoa City, Wisconsin,
a real town with little more than a post office and convenience
store (Bill and Lee Philip Bell used to go through there driving
from Chicago to Lake Geneva). Oakdale, As The World Turns's setting,
is a fictional town in Illinois. Pine Valley (All My Children) and
Llanview (One Life To Live) are fictional suburbs of Philadelphia.
Port Charles (General Hospital and the now-defunct Port Charles)
is supposed to be somewhere near Buffalo. Ryan's Hope was the
first soap to be set in a real city: New York, and I believe
The City (the successor to Loving) was set there as well.
And aren't Collinsport (Dark Shadows) and Harmony (Passions)
supposed to be in Maine? Oh, and don't forget Santa Barbara
and Sunset Beach. Also, Woodbridge (The Secret Storm) and
Rosehill (Love Of Life) were fictional New York towns.
Edited by bpatrick on 06/10/05 11:06 PM.

Also, Amen and Boy Meets World were Philly or around Philly.
