Classic Twilight Zone re-enters syndication

It seems Viacom has put the original Twilight Zone series back on the over the air syndication shelf after a four or five year run exclusivly with the Sci Fi Channel. KDOC TV, a UHF outlet in Los Angeles is giving the show a 3 episode a week run on Tuesday evenings which leads me to believe the price on the show has gone down. Any other over-the-air outlets touting a classic TZ return?

From looking at their schedule, "ME-TV" 23 in Chicago is running the original TZ Monday through Friday at 10 PM. But then again, they have access to a lot of shows no other stations have.

Anything that ME-TV in Chicago is running is also available in other markets -- it's just that few stations are interested in buying and running these classic programs anymore.

The original "Twilight Zone" repeats are being offered by Paramount Domestic Television in any market where a local station is interested in picking up the rights. They also have many, many other classic shows available that are only running in a handful of cities -- such as "Hogan's Heroes", "The Wild Wild West", and "The Brady Bunch". Other syndicators also offer many older programs that just don't seem to be running in many cities.

Were I running an independent station and could pick-up reruns of any former network series, besides some of today's top off-network rerun packages ("Seinfeld", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Friends"), I would pick-up not only "Twilight Zone", but "I Love Lucy", "M*A*S*H", the original "Star Trek", "Gilligan's Island" and "Brady Bunch" as well.

The classic shows likely would fill-up fringe slots (the newer fare would go into the 5-8 P.M. and 11-11:30 P.M. ET timeframes) on my schedule, but I'm sure they would get an audience.

I applaud ME-TV for bringing back older and more scarce programming to broadcast television in the Chicago area. They could have gone another route and run infomercials 12 hours a day. WCIU and the low-powered brokered ethnic station they operate must be making enough money to keep ME-TV from going to an infomercial-heavy schedule.

I see that WBGN-LP in Pittsburgh is the only station I know of that is running the Carson's Comedy Classics shows that were put together for syndication in the early '80s - and they're doing so TWICE a day. I'm surprised that no other stations (including ME-TV or even AZ-TV in Phoenix) decided to pick this up after Carson died in January. In fact, I don't think they've been shown anywhere since the end of the Pat Robertson era for the Family Channel in 1997! I'd be willing to see these shows again in addition to the limited material that is on the Johnny Carson DVD box set.

My dream indepenent station would carry "The Six Million Dollar Man", "The Bionic Woman", "The Greatest American Hero", "Barney Miller", "Soap", "Benson", "Mork & Mindy", "Starsky & Hutch", "S.W.A.T.", "The Odd Couple", & "I Spy". The shows mentioned above.
______________

Re: Classic shows in syndication

The fake UPN 9 in New Haven, Connecticut (WCTX/59) carries Taxi, Cheers, and the original Cosby Show in hi-profile time slots. (Taxi is on at 1PM, Cosby is on 130PM-230PM, and Cheers is on at 6PM). Owned by Lin-TV.

The real UPN 9 in New York (WWOR) carries Who's The Boss, Charles in Charge, Cosby and Coach. Owned by FOX.

Both carry newer shows Mad About You and The Nanny. And rececent shows too including: The Parkers, Yes Dear, and King of Queens.

Here in Denver, KTVD 20 (UPN), also airs "I Love Lucy" during the day. Not sure about the time though (I'm thinking 12:00 NOON).

Anyone else from Denver around to confirm this? The website isn't much help.

Radio? Uhh.....What's THAT?? :)

In Memphis the only pre-1980 shows that are still shown are MASH and Sanford and Son on WHBQ Fox 13, Perry Mason on WREG CBS 3, and possibly The Andy Griffith Show (it keeps shifting between WPTY ABC 24 and WLMT UPN/WB 30), unless there's something else on low power stations.

I was in the Dalllas-Fort Worth area, and saw shows I hadn't seen in years except for possibly on cable. There wasn't a station like ME-TV, but there were more stations and more classic shows on the schedule as a result. I keep hoping if PAX folds that WPXX 50 will open a chance for more classic TV reruns.

Considering that the newer stuff is typically running in the 5 PM to 8 PM and 11 PM to Midnight slots on Fox, WB, and UPN affiliates in most markets, I'd flip what you propose, and put the classic shows in these time slots to counter program the existing stations. That way, I could provide a real alternative to what is currently available -- and the result would hopefully be a service valued by enough viewers to create decent ratings for these older shows.
