Classic WZOU TV Spot

Yes, the first DJ on the left is Scott McKenzie now heard on WOMX (Mix 105.1) in Orlando and the one on the right is Ron Engelman (from KMEL fame in San Francisco). They were the last Morning Zoo on the old WZOU before JR (Johnnie Edwards) signed on.

I just found out that sadly, Ron passed away two years ago. Here is a memorial video on him I found created by his daughter.

"Big Trouble In Little China" promo has Don LaFontaine's voiceover. Another legendary voice forever silenced. In the past year, I have realized how much I miss hearing him along with Brian James.

Only WZOU spot I ever saw was during their smooth jazz days. It included the animated "cool cats" which I was familiar with because I recognized them from a similar spot for New York's then-smooth jazz station CD 101.9.

WZOU was never smooth jazz.

Anyone know which jingle package ZOU was using since 1990. I know up until early 1990, they were using TM Century's "All Hit Kit" package after using JAM Creative's jingle packages since 1984.

I agree, bring back WZOU or an equilivant. A dance-friendly CHR would kick Jam'n and Kiss's butts! Seriously, look at the damn PPM's for both stations! They have almost a 15 share together!!! Someone HAS to be risky and make a change for the best...Boston radio can't be that bland and predictable!

The jingles used near the end of WZOU were a custom package by a company called FirstCom. The demo may be around online somewhere. I can post it later on if it isn't.

What was Z-94? I remember a TV spot featuring rail workers switching a trolley track because you were supposed to "switch" to the new Z-94. I'm guessing it was early incarnation of WZOU?

Z-94 is what they called WZOU in the mid-late 80's. In the early 90's, it just became "94.5 WZOU"

If WJMN put WZOU on their HD2, I would actually buy an HD kit. 93.7 may do well with Zou format. Put a morning zoo in place, increase the street team effort, and pipe in the rest.

What a shame.

Bring WZOU back!

I never listened to WZOU but that's a great aircheck. Nice to hear Judy Paparelli's voice. Is she still around? For trivia buffs, Pierce mentions that the Pam-dreams-the-entire-season episode of Dallas airs that night.

I was still in college during the time of this aircheck (1986) and I don't recall who I listened to at that time. I do recall usually listening to Bob and Zip on WAAF/mornings while commuting to school.

Once Bob left, it wasn't the same. Greg Hill took over with Zip and, one morning, I actually said to myself "Gee, is Zip even there? He sure doesn't say much anymore." And, immediately after, Greg said to Zip "Yo, Zip, say something man. I can't do this alone." And the rest is history. :D

Eventually, I dumped them and moved on but I don't know to whom. Probably Loren and Wally. Or maybe Joe and Andy if they were together at the time.

I was there 1984 at sign on till 87. Judy was a nice lady. Brian Pierce and his wife do a very successful country morning show at KFDI in Wichita. At WZOU we went through 800 different sales to 800 owners and 20 PD's in 3 years so it was very hard to succeed. I left for WHDH long before JR arrived. But still very proud of the promos. Nice to hear this aircheck.

Is that right? Well, I guess the cats had multitasked - I stand corrected...

I guess this is the one you're referring to? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6MnXG-NvT0

I remember these days well. I live in Southeastern NH at the time. I definitely preferred WZOU over Kiss during that time.
