Classical coverage of Canada.

I thought I read somewhere that Canada approved HD Radio (IBOC)? If so, maybe the CBC can piggyback Radio 3 as an HD Radio subchannel on some of their FM stations?

Not the same system as the U.S. - Canada had approved DAB, which failed. Most of the DAB stations are gone now.

I never once saw a DAB receiver.

Unfortunately (from the standpoint of the classical music fan), what the contributors are generally saying is that they want more spoken-word programming.

And they're getting it. There's a trend here towards reducing music programming on U.S. public stations & replacing it with spoken-word material.

If you're in the GTA or Niagara Peninsula (where presumably the U.S. station you're listening to is in Buffalo) you're probably not at as much risk - as there are multiple U.S. public stations there.

Yes, I've been hearing about that, regarding more spoken word for NPR stations. However, the station I listen to is specifically called 'Classic FM' (Syracuse NY based, but I receive the Watertown signal). Although it is listener supported and gets its hourly news from NPR, there are a number of other stations (WRVO, WSLU, etc), which carry the full suite of NPR offerings. So I remain hopeful. ;D

The only way CBC could launch Radio 3 on conventional radio would be for them to move all their Radio One stations back to AM, or for CRTC regulations to change. Current CRTC regulations only allow an entity to own two FM stations per official language per market.

Oh yeah, I forget about that little detail. :p I suppose our public broadcaster has to follow those rules too. :D Your other points are also very much valid.

It doesn't make any sense that CBC Radio 2 and Radio-Canada Espace Musique has drop most of the Classical and Jazz program for Indie and AAA Music. If you don't live in Toronto, Montreal, Colburg or Quebec City. Then your options are limited for Classical Music.

With regard to southwestern Ontario, the Windsor area has WRCJ during the day. Some areas may also be able to pick up 91.3 WGTE out of Toledo, Ohio (outside of NPR news blocks) - particularly since Windsor's CJAM switched from 91.5 to 99.1. Some along the Lake Erie shoreline may also be able to get Cleveland's 104.9 WCLV from across the lake.

Sault Ste. Marie gets Central Michigan University's CMU Public Radio on 98.3 WCMZ out of Sault, Michigan, but they are classical only during certain daytime dayparts. The last time I was up there I was able to get Interlochen Center for the Arts' WIAB 88.5 out of Mackinaw City which is almost all classical but the Premiere Chaine station on 88.1 likely wipes out reception on all but the best radios.

I believe some in the Thunder Bay area may be able to get MPR Classical on WGGL 91.1 from Houghton, MI, across the lake. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that WGGL was at one time carried on the Thunder Bay cable system.

Only right on the shoreline, basically, with a weak signal...WCLV at 104.9 is a 6 kW class A that probably doesn't make it well across Lake Erie.

95.5 (a full B) may have been heard there. It's now Salem CCM WFHM "The Fish".
