R&R reports public station WRCJ in Detroit has switched to a format similar to WRTI - classical all day, jazz all night. Apparently there hasn't been a full time classical or jazz station there for awhile. Is this marriage working out on WRTI? They have expanded the classical programming since they started to include more time weekend days, but I still miss an option to hear classical music anytime. I'd imagine jazz fans feel the same, too. I guess by now listeners are in a "better parttime than no time" mentality and use alternate sources the rest of the time.

The last I heard was about a year ago. Apparently, financial support for WRTI is stronger with the split format than it was in recent years with the all-Jazz format. I wish WRTI all the best. But I still find it unbelievable that a market as large as Philly can't support one full-time Jazz and one full-time Classical station - even as non-comms. A sad statement about the state of the radio business and society at larage.

I seldom listened to WFLN during the day, except on weekends, because, frankly, classical does not do it for me when working. I listened at night, sometimes til one or two in the morning. So I really miss that option now. I would imagine there are jazz fans who miss their music during the day. There are enough non-coms in the area that one should be able to work out a deal with WRTI for one station to stay classical and one jazz.
Is this a situation where hi-def radio could help? One station could do jazz AND classical full time.

Actually Philly does have a fulltime commercial jazz outlet,WJJZ. But WRTI has a much broader spectrum of jazz from early to modern along with some unique spinners such as the timeless Bob Perkins who reminds me of Al"Jazzbo"Collins.
If I want a laugh, I tune in at 3pm on Sundays when jazz is briefly interrupted for a 3 hour classical bloc (usually starting with a syndicated orchestral broadcast). It sounds like Bob Perkins is reluctantly giving the airwaves over to "The Dark Side".
Evil Roy has a point. Forget about a commercial Classical station in Philly Forever more.I have been waiting and waiting for WWFM, Mercer County (NJ) Community College's marvelous Classical and cultural station to reappear on a
translator in the Greater Philadelphia Area after the loss of 107.9. Either they have given up the fight or the religious station groups are beating them to the available frequencies. Thus we have a choice of 5 or 6 religious format stations and repeaters both AM and FM and NA-DUH a whisper of a chance for a classical translator. I guess we are all to subscribe to satellite radio or be content with self-programmed ipods. Good Grief!!

There is definitely a need for a 24 hour 7 day JAZZ station here in Philly. For a large market such as ours not to have one is absurd. There is one station that alledges to play jazz but it is just electric sax crap that turns off true jazz lovers. WWDB had a great jazz format until Sid Mark started playing advant guarde jazz which was a little too far out. Damon Castle had a great jazz format going but it was too little too late when they went all talk radio. We need personality radio with a jazz format that includes the greats (ART TATUM, SONNY STITT, BEN WEBSTER, DIZZY GILLESPIE, ETC)... or is that asking too much? WRTI has a great format...for at least half the day...
