Classical Music Starts on 101.1 Next Wednesday

Dispatch reports via the web the start date along with some additional transition info.

Appears classical music will start Weds 12/15.

This was also annouced on the Classical 101 Facebook page.

"Classical 101
We're thrilled to announce that Classical 101 will launch with all classical programming, all day, every day next Wednesday morning at 6 am. (pending the final sale of 101.1 fm)"

(The fresh new sound of 105 ((five five five)) hot 105 efeeem.) For some reason that jingle came to mind. The "eee's" are pronounced "eh" btw lol!

Too bad Clear Channel owns the 105.7 signal now. Of course if Wilkes was willing they could bring back the 107 part of the hot105/hot 107. That would get Columbus out of having 4 country signals.

It's now official.... Email from tOSU:

"The announcement just came through. The Classical 101 transaction is now complete. WOSU will premiere Classical 101 at 6 am tomorrow morning with a message from OSU’s President Gee and then it’s on to 24-hour classical music!"

From the other thread, where I posted:

I wonder if they'll have a dedicated Classical 101 stream at launch, or if they'll repurpose the existing classical stream. For that matter, I wonder if they'll put Classical 101 on WOSU-FM/89.7's classical HD subchannel.

------------

I'm listening right now to the classical stream, for any sign of the Classical 101 branding or the new WOSA calls. It probably won't happen until 6 AM.

WOSA "Classical 101" is up and running, and here's audio of the start (with tOSU president Gordon Gee, and morning host Bryce Lancaster), and a celebratory picture:

Hmmm...there's Gordon Gee referring to the music WOSA 101 will be playing as the greatest music ever created. True...but I wonder if his personal ipad is chock full of mindless crap. Many people in the public radio biz are about as culturally sophisticated as Ralphie's father in Jean Shepherd's "A Christmas Story".

True. And he mindlessly supports the BCS. ;)

But aren't all bow-tie wearers partial to Classical Music ;)?

What I've always wondered is where is the student radio station? They have two FM frequencies and no outlet for the broadcasting students.

Maybe they(tOSU) will now use the 820 AM facility as a student radio station? They may sell 820 AM to help pay for 101.1? Personally, I don't see them keeping 820 AM in it's present form.

There is no outlet for broadcasting students because there are no broadcasting students. The Broadcast Journalism program was discontinued long ago, and the Communication curriculum is mostly theoretical, not practical.

There is no outlet for broadcasting students because there are no broadcasting students. The Broadcast Journalism department was done away with years ago, and the Communication curriculum is mostly theoretical, not practical.

OSU does not have a broadcasting program to my knowledge.

Maybe broadcasting wasn't the word to use, but they have plenty of programs and courses that could utilize the outlet. Communication, journalism, reporting and media, etc. http://www.comm.ohio-state.edu/

Not to mention being one of the largest college towns in the country without a student-run radio station. Not even a LPFM.

Unfortunately the word from colleges seems to be that fewer and fewer students are showing any interest in volunteering for stations. Some longtime college stations have ceased operations this year. It's sad to see, but no doubt largely driven by the change in the media landscape and the attendant reduction in the relevance and "glamor" of radio to college students.
