Hey Guys:

I've completed a list of All the Classical radio stations for the bay area:

A very good list; thanks for sharing. Several stations also had classical music blocks, among them KABL and KPEN 101.3. Some people wonder why there were so many classical FMs. It wasn't that there was any huge audience; there wasn't. It was because long symphonic works required little attention from a board op who could be doing numerous other things (such as typing up program logs, dubbing spots, whatever).

Also, the thing FM had to sell over AM was its superior fidelity. FMs were money losers for a few decades, and many stations simply played whatever was easiest just in order to stay on the air enough hours to keep their licenses. In those days (50s and 60s) it was not unusual for an FM station to be on the air only from 3 to 9pm, just enough to indicate they were making a good faith effort to keep their licenses.

Hey DavidKaye:

Im happy to share. The list I posted is just all Classical stations only. Thank you for the other info about KABL and KPEN. I know about those stations doing some classical programming. KPEN did classical at night and I think KABL did classical at night for a couple of days a week as well.

KSFR after May 1, 1967 broke up there format (still doing some classical from 6am till 12noon) with other programming (Pop Standrds Sat And Sun, Jazz from 12mid till 6am, folk at night, Broadway shows from 12n to 2pm, showtunes and movie soundtracks from 4pm till 12mid and talk-spoken word 2pm till 4pm) till they went progressive in 1968 as KSAN.

I forgot to post that KRON from 47 to 55 did classical programming from 3pm till 9pm.

I still have blanks as you can see. So I am hoping that someone here can help me fill them in.

I put a Top 40 list up too. I hope you have seen it. And the next lists will be all Beautiful music stations and country stations when I get my lists together.

T.J.

I also want to add that Saul Levine's version of KKHI-100.7 was also simulcasted on its AM sister station at AM 1510 from 1994-95, then switched to Jazz in 1995 but switched back to Classical in 1997 until 1998. I also want to add Saul Levine's KMZT which also was on 1510. K-Mozart was on twice but can't figure out the years it was on? 2000-02 and 2004-05. I think. Someone else could add a more definite date?

If I can remember correctly KPEN at 97.7 (after the Gabbert ownership days) with studios located in the beautiful Old Mill
shopping center (early 80') played a variety of music from easy rock and light jazz to a little "beautiful music" Vic Sterling image announcer at KRON TV for years hosted a evening show at KPEN (Los Altos/Mt.view).
