Classical takes a hit in DC

Long-time Washington DC classical outlet WGMS @ 103.5fm is getting moved to two marginal/rimshot signals so that DC news outlet WTOP-FM can get an improved signal.

Confirmed by AllAccess today, the change reportedly just took place (noon ET).

Here's the Bonneville DC shakeout:

* Classical WGMS moves from 103.5 to the 104.1/103.9 combo, displacing CHR Z104. Z104 is dead.

* WTOP adds 103.5 as an in-market FM frequency and keeps 820/Frederick. 1500/107.7 stay with WTOP for now, and launch an in-depth news service in association with the Washington Post in late March.

* Assuming Bonneville re-ups with the Washington Nationals, they'd end up on the 1500/107.7 combo. They were on 1050 AM full-time last year, with night and weekend games on Z104.

Re: Bonneville's DC Shakeout - UPDATED

Looks like they're trying to force WTOP listeners to FM. 820 doesn't cover DC well according to the coverage maps.

Bonneville does appear dedicated to news. WTOP, WFED (what a niche!), and coming soon, Washington Post radio.

Agreed. Joining forces with one of the most respected daily newspapers in the nation in the Washington Post is a good move for Bonneville. How good, only time will tell.

they could of least put it on the same channel, but a different channel? I always hated bonneville, always makes the most boring moves<P ID="signature">______________

Too bad for classical listeners, but the commercial form of the format is headed for oblivion everywhere. WGMS will sputter along for a while on the rimshots, then get the axe.

Similar situation about to happen in Boston with WCRB.

820 is not MEANT to cover DC. It is a Frederick station aimed at the outer end of the I-270 corridor from MD into DC. It's still going to simulcast WTOP because it's the only major weak area left for DC commuters after 103.5's addition.
