Classless Move By First Media

Apparently, First Media Radio, owners of WJLS in Beckley, called in 18 year veteran Big Ugly, Dave Willis, OM/Morning Host, who was on bereavement leave for the loss of his father, and let him go...no reason given, no discussions. Truly classless move if that is in fact the case.

Are they associated with Clear Channel or Cumulus? Sounds like some those two giants would do. Our industry as reached to a new low my friend.

No, they're a separate company...they own stations in MD, NC, VA, WV and PA. Some of the money behind the company is from the Marriott group.

I realize that but their move was so damn stupid I thought maybe they borrowed a page from the Clear Chanel or Cumulus play book!

I do not work for "First Media" but was the decision done by Beckley folks or someone at "headquarters" who probably did not even know his name? They just saw an "expense". Too much for that has happened lately all types of American business.

I was caught up in "down sizing" once. My wife was 5 months pregnant! Thankfully the union (CWA) had as part of the contract a month continuation of heath insurance for every year of service. We made without going bankrupt, but it was close.

They've generally got a good reputation--lots of longtime employees. And JLS has always done really well, so it's hard to imagine a "downsizing" scenario. Lousy timing, but usually there are two sides to anybody's departure, and the only ones who really know are the employee and the employer.

The one thing that we can count on is that we'll never know for sure.

I also understand that they're holding him to a non-compete, and for whatever reason he's not able to draw unemployment for 6 weeks...really nice for a guy with a new baby and family to support.
