CLAY HUNTINGTON, RIP

Another local legend gone ... Clay Huntington (who owned KLAY in Lakewood) but a fixture in the Tacoma community (including his efforts to get Cheney Stadium off the ground ... at least he lived to see a recent renovation). 89 years old.

Wow, he truly was a Puget Sound radio legend...and pioneer. One of his most notable radio contributions was putting 106.1 FM on the air, then known as KLAY-FM and (along with KOL-FM) a pioneering rock station of the late '60s/early '70s. Didn't Steve Slaton start here? I heard something about that, but it might be the smokey haze. Clay also put the original KLAY-AM on the air at 1480 kHz before moving it to 1180 in 1990......

Corrections?

at some point around 78/79, i discovered KLAY 106.1 FM. this was a true album rock station, and a great alternative to KISW, and KZOK. i still remember rod stewarts cool version of "standing in the shadows of love" getting often airplay, never to be heard by me again, along with many other unique tracks. back around then, in jr high school wood shop class, several fellow cool, hip to the rock radio scene students, started making KISW, and KZOK wooden signs, to display their rock channel proudly. somewhere, i still have the sign i made in woodshop that reads "KLAY 106.1 FM ROCK OF THE NORTHWEST", as this was scotts main station for a few years. i remember hearing the owners name mentioned on air, and always thought "how cool, clay, owns KLAY". somewhere, i still have the final few hours of KLAY's broadcast on reel to reel. the last song they played was from the doors "the end". the final sign off was "KLAY FM tacoma, now concludes its days of broadcasting................."

That was a great station. Groundbreaking 60's-70's stoner-jock FM at its best. First time I ever heard INNAGADDADAVIDA the full-on version was on KLAY one night..Long version cuts back to back all night long..

KLAY 106.1 FM. What a great station that was. Discovered many new artists while listening to the station. Never would have heard them listening to KZOK or KISW.

Found the station in 1974. Didn't realize it had been going since 1969. Missed out on a few years of great radio.
