CLEAR CHANNEL 740AM "LA PRECIOSA"

Well it sounds like Clear Channel second experiment with Spanish radio flopped. "La Preciosa" format is off the air and now they are trying a balads format on 740AM. The Spanish balads format was tried in Orlando by 1030AM some years ago and it didn't worked.

can i say "i told you so?" and this balids crap will not work. i bet you. so maybe oldies? maybe not, but it was anice thought. give sunny a run for there money... i'd love oldies on am again. sunny is not an oldies station. i don't care what anyone may say. maybe cool 7400? that would be excelent. just my thoughts. or maybe a format we have not had yet... or just bring back the team.

I say bring back the team. At least they pulled a 1.4... Heck WDAE 620 in Tampa/ St Pete on pulls a 2.3 and they have 3 pro sports teams in town to our one. I guess we can add 740 to the wasted 50KW thread. A .4 maybe the next book they will do as good as WAMTor WORL and not even show up in the book

Until the general and operation managers change at Clear Channel Orlando, you won't get sports. They hate sports and always have. Besides, it would be like admitting they screwed up... which is never gonna happen. I don't think the ratings matter that much in this situation. I think it's more of a programming position thing to sell as a combo with Rumba.

In that case....why not Spanish news/Talk?

well i honestly think that something is going to give in this market. i hope someone decides to put something decent on in this market. I am willing to bet that the new format on 740 will do worse off than the last hispanic format... i think we will see a 0.2 or something. i'll be looking at the ratings on this one.
I'm not dissing hispanic formats but there is enough hispanic radio here in orlando. how about a real good rock station? or oldies? but this is cheap channel we are talking about here. oh well, it's fun to speculate.
and i do not mean rock on 740.
so i will keep my ears on this one. it will be interesting.

Froggy has a good point about a Spanish news/talk format. WAQI 710 in Miami is the #1 AM by far with consistently a 5>0 or better. There are a lot of Hisoanics in Miami but there are a lot in Orlando. also.

A news talk format (whatever language) takes people to execute and the last thing they're gonna do is hire more people to run a radio station.

I'm sure CC can do a lot better things with this signal, but if they were going to keep it Spanish, Pop/Romance is the way to go. It didn't work on 1030 AM before because a large chunk of the programming was brokered --- pill pushers at 2:00 pm.

Raymond Torres is a pretty good PD, and I'm sure they will get some good mileage out of this new format. If it were me I would have done COOL 740....but I'm not there for a reason.

Good programmer Raymond Torres?, give me a break. With a full power class C like 100.3 (WRUM)and WNUE, Titusville with a mediocre signal is just below him and sometimes above him. You call that a "good programmer". Which Arbitron do you look at?.

You said that, not me. If you are programming a station that saturates a market and well beyond that market with signal and your competitor is a station with an extremely deficient signal that is not receivable in over 50% of homes of the target audience and that competitor trails you and in some books is above you do have a SERIOUS programming problems. Who would you blame?.

So based on your logic, any station that is not # 1 has a bad programmer. Genius. ???

You don't know what you are talking about. Romantica (Romantic) 1030AM didn't work because the Latino population didn't appeal to a sophisticated format like Spanish AC. Romantica 1030 wasn't brokered at all. It had Daniel Pol 6-10am 10-3 Voice Tracked 3-7pm Larry Calderon, and 7-12p Luna. It lasted almost 2 full year’s 100% Music with billboards and TV promotion all across town.

Raymond Torres is pretty good but what he said in El Nuevo Dia newspaper about wanting to have a format that appeals "Young Hispanic Professionals’" is not going to work. "Young Hispanic Professionals’" will listen to 98.1 because they play more pop music than 100.3. In top of that 740 sounds quality is as bad as it can be for am. If you listen to 1030AM you will hear the difference. On top of that they recycle talent from 100.3. This is a cheap channel move for Raymond in order to get the station. This experiment will last 6 Months. Probably corporate told him that they had a year to make the station work in Spanish and that was their first 6 months.

WAQI is a 100% down-with-Castro-Cuban format. It has no listeners under 50 or 55, and an average age of about 72.

Orlando has very few Cubans by comparison, and no interest in the kind of format on WAQI.

You can do it with 3 people on staff....A PD,ND and 1 Local Host...SYNDICATE All the Dayparts, heck we already do it with English News Talk Stations.

There are no syndicated programs. Two attempts at a network for Spanish talk have failed.

The response I was hoping we'd get from David was that WRUM and WNUE are different formats. Yes, they're both Spanish... and to those of us who only speak and listen to English radio... sound the same. But they're different. Kind of like XL and Magic... just because they're both English doesn't mean they're competing for the same audience. With that said, just because 98.1 beats 100.3 doesn't mean Rumba is doing bad.... but I think they should be doing better. As for 740... it's a throwaway to the folks in Maitland right now. Let's see what happens after the CC sale goes through... then we'll talk.

Any chances Orlando's 740 could be bought, or at least, "LMA-ed" by a company/group targeting Puerto Ricans? ;D
Univisión? SBS? Uno Radio? ;)

Hey, I can dream. There are more chances of me developing superpowers though.... :p :-\ :-[
