With the Clear Channel cuts even affecting B104 when will is start effecting the jocks at ZZO ?

Doubtful any cuts will be needed at ZZO for the budget. With all the money being saved on Matthews contract from B, ZZO should be fine.

are you kidding me? THREE dayparts at ZZO have been affected. Longtime PM drive guy Blake Dannen left in July, closely followed by Night guy Chris Line. the PD Tori put herself in PM drive because THEY. HAVE. NO. MONEY. so that left middays open. the girl they hired for middays was hired and quit in NINE DAYS. (the midday girl they have now was NOT the one initially hired) the only daypart NOT affected was mornings. And it all comes down to the cuts at Clear Channel company-wide. WZZO and B-104 have been gutted in the last 6 months.

...and all of that happened BEFORE Ken Matthews left B104. i guess you don't listen to ZZO very much, eh? LOL

Blake Dannen continues in PM drive over at 99.9 The Hawk and Chris Line is now middays on Cat Country.

THERE.IS.NO.MONEY.IN.RADIO. Regardless of the company. CC's cuts took place because they needed to cut costs prior to a buy out...that's just business. Citadel's merger with ABC will undoubtedly result in people losing jobs, too. The bottom line is that radio people don't have high salaries...do a survey locally and I can guarantee most are not happy with their base salary. Radio people make all their money on live broadcasts.

i have to disagree with you. there are many local radio people making good, even excellent, salaries...even jocks that are NOT in AM drive. it's like any other business....your pay gets better with time and there's a broad range of salaries based on experience, how well you perform, etc. making blanket statements about an industry (local or otherwise) that salaries are lousy just lets the owners off the hook! and appearance money is only about 25% of local jock salaries, in most cases. they certainly COUNT on it, but it's not "most" or even half of their income.

As for WZZO and B-104, the recent lay-offs in the last 6 months seem to be more brutal and run deeper than any other local radio company, buy-out or not.

you CAN have an excellent salary in local radio and you CAN be a valued employee. you just have to be good at your job, have a bit of luck, and work for the right people. like any other industry.

and speaking of counting on gig money, does anyone know if it's true that CC-Allentown is trying to do away with jock appearances and re-direct that income back into the corporate coffers by talking clients into buying more spots? if so, that's horrible for the WZZO and B-104 jocks and not serving the clients!

Commercial radio stopped serving the PUBLIC - so now is the industry getting around to not serving the CLIENT?

Maybe P.T. Barnum was right...

(Just another point of view)

whatutalkinabout - valid point, excuse my blanket statement. from personal experience, salaries for those young in the industry are not even enough to afford renting a decent apartment in the Valley, utilities, living expenses and student loans. it's sad. if radio wants to grow and recruit new talent, they have to make it a hospitable environment in which to work, and that includes providing a liveable salary and benefits. point taken about remotes...no, they're not 50% of my pay, but they have made the difference in whether i got new tires for my car or not. 30% pay from remotes is still significant.

I agree 100%. There are very few examples of commercial radio actually serving the public in a meaningful way. Yes, there's the feel-good story about fundraising, but little local news / community forum coverage on most stations.

I was speaking to a work colleague who was stuck on I-78 last Wednesday between New Smithville and Kutztown for 20 hours. She -- and her 9-year-old-daughter -- heard surprisingly little on radio about the I-78 trouble.

Frankly, WFMZ-TV did the best job (IMHO) covering the mess. Unfortunately WFMZ isn't of much use in the car.

I can't speak for Allentown radio, but Y102 in Reading had constant coverage of the I-78 mess on the air constantly. Our traffic coverage ran from 5 AM until 6 PM each day, with additional announcements made through the night.

Making Waves: I totally agree with your latest comments. ;)

As for the I-78 mess, I know 99.9 The Hawk uses WFMZ for their traffic reports 4x an hour all afternoon and it was the lead story all during that mess...and the Hawk NewsMinutes at 12:15, 4:15, and 5:15 all gave info. on it. (the NewsMinutes are provided by The Morning Call). and that's not including the Hawk DJs, who all provided updates. apart from NEWS stations, The Hawk seems to be the best at providing that info. when you need it.
