Clear Channel and GBLT Pride

Gil Gross said he'll be at the KKSF Newstalk 910 booth at SF GBLT Pride this Sunday. This might be a good opportunity to meet'n'greet if you're so inclined.

Say what you will about Clear Channel, but they've had all or most of their local radio stations represented in one form or another, with a booth or hosting a performing stage, for many many years.

Things weren't always like that. I remember quite a number of years ago when KGO-TV covered the parade (mainly because it happened to march right past KGO-TV's then studios on Golden Gate Avenue. The weekend newscaster at the time did the story, then punched the sports guy on the arm and said, "But none of those guys were at your game today, huh?"

My, how times have changed.

I'm really surprised with San Francisco being the Mecca of the GLBT community that the local commercial radio community never seized upon this promotional opportunity MUCH earlier.

Huh? Since the beginning KPFA covered the parade, though it was a political march in those days. After it evolved into a non-political parade KPFA went on to other things. KPFA was probably the only station to cover the "Occupy" protests where queer activists burst into a Pride planning committee meeting chanting, "We're a community, not a commodity" (a sentiment echoed by many who feel that the event has lost most of its meaning).
