Clear Channel and the "MY" Moniker

This may sound a bit ironic to some, what with Clear Channel owning a trademark on the "Kiss" name for radio, but CC is on record as telling one of its "My" stations (KLMY in Lincoln, NE) to stop calling itself "My." Now, KLMY has removed the "My" moniker from its imaging and my1063.com website, and is soliciting listener suggestions for a new name. (More from Lincoln Journal Star) Anyone have any more info on who may own the "My" name for radio, or if CC will tell its other "My" stations to stop the way KLMY has?

Actually, it doesn't--it attempted to get a national trademark, but there were a couple already existing Kiss stations in the Midwest that objected. As a result, Clear Channel cannot use the Kiss moniker within a reasonable radius of those stations. And it's not just the signla-range, it think it's within a few dozen miles.

It's all trademark law which is completely and utterly confusing.

What I find amusing is that Cheap Channel's battle over the Kiss name led to one of the greatest stations in the Midwest being created: Energy 92-7&5 in Chicago. CC told the stations, which were using the Kiss name at the time, to drop the name or they'd sue. So they dropped it... and flipped to the first commercial modern currents-oriented dance format in the country!

And what was equally funny was when Clear Channel tried to issue a C&D to Entercom in Milwaukee over their Kiss. Entercom then responded by citing Clear Channel's use of "Mix" on some of their stations and reminded them that their Mix station was the first in the country to use the handle.

Obviously, that shut Clear Channel up in that case.

Clear Channel thinks that if they see a good station name, they own it.

If they touch something, they own it.

If they see something, they own it.

If they think about something, they own it.

Clear Channel is just like the villain in 'Elmo In Grouchland'.

Every "My" station I've ever heard or heard of has been owned by CC. Maybe the problem isn't another radio company, but a conflict with Fox's new MyNetwork TV? Perhaps the folks at News Corp don't want them using a name that sounds like their TV venture.
