Clear Channel and WSSL 100.5

Looking back at the ratings, I noticed how much WSSL has fallen over the past year. Consecutively. They've lost pretty much half of their share....100 was tops 3 or 4 years ago and even beat WESC. What's going on there? I'm not a regular listener, so I wouldn't know....but how is the on-air sound? Is it the music, presentation, talent, what? WESC remains solid though and has been top 3 for ages.

Speaking of 100.5, Ric Larson is gone from WSSL afternoons. Any idea what happened....who's handling it now? Gone from the website as of today.

I'm guessing whatever it is, it'll be VT'ed.

If you check ratings of country music stations across the country that play modern country music more than traditional country you will see a pattern of ratings drop over the last few years. Of course there are going to be certain areas of the country where modern country stations will do well as these are areas that have population that maybe didn't care for the traditional country sound of country music. As country music keeps mixing different types of music into it's sound the country sound gets thiner and thiner and station that play mostly modern country music will have their ratings continue to drop, simple answer if country music keeps going the way it's going it will cease to be country music in the not to distant future. If Nashville keeps allowing and pushing for this to happen then our country ie: USA will have lost it's country music. WESC on the other hand mixes modern country music with the right mix of traditional country music to keep that country sound that people want to hear along with keeping in touch with their listeners and the ratings stay up, they do a very good job.

I also think that is why WCOS is still beating New 92 so badly here in Columbia, because they have a similar music mix to WESC and I personally like listening to that as well.

This is just my lowly opinion but could it be that the difference in WESC and WSSL ratings is due to a heritage station versus a "newcomer"? Maybe I am way off base here but most anyone I talk to in the upstate will say WESC when you mention country music even though they are well aware of WSSL.

I realize WSSL has been around for a long time but not as long as WESC and its heritage. The great "660 in Dixie" signed on in 1947 and was WESC-AM until 2000. That great country sound still lives on at 92.5.

Just for fun sometimes when I am riding down the road and listening to 92.5, I will raise the bass and lower the treble and by golly I could swear I am listening to the old WESC 660.

Just an old-timer's opinion.

I enjoyed hearing all what all 3 of you had to say, and I can't disagree with any point made. And Lhsh I agree that 92.5 sounds a lot like WCOS.

WSSL does not seem to be playing just 'hot country.' I heard Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places" from 1990 last night. Seems more like an 'all time favorite' for 92.5, IMO. Lately, when scanning around, I've heard both playing the same song at the exact same time. Any idea what WSSL is doing from 3pm-on now? Was Ric Larson voicetracked?

WESC sounds great, IMO. Every dang aspect of the thing. It is executed very well. I'm noticing they've updated the music lately and more of the 'all time favorites' are in fact 90s songs. I still hear a few pre-90s but not as much like the Conway, Waylon, George, etc type stuff. I bet if WESC WAS to ever flip, it's the only station that would generate a huge public reaction. They have an amazing heritage and haven't missed a beat since 1947!

Funny you should say that. I remember many years ago, I am guessing the late 60's, WESC-AM started running ads after the first of the year that said they were changing to "rock and roll" music. The outcry from advertisers and listeners was overwhelming. Many of their long time advertisers threatened to leave. My mom was an avid listener and was mad as hell that they were going to replace her beloved country music with what she called "noise". On April fools day of that year, they said "April Fool" about the format change. Many people including myself always wondered if they actually intended to change the format and used April fools as an out because of all the outcry. Or was it just an elaborate April Fools joke. I know this joke has been done many times at other stations but if it was a joke, it was really out of character for "straight and narrow" WESC at the time. Is there anyone else around old enough to remember this?

Haha...no MK, but it sounds like it would have been a treat to hear!

WSSL afternoons are now done by Billy Greenwood, VT'ed from 93.7 The Bull, KSD-FM where he is PD and afternoons. Thoughts?

Looks like they're doing WSSL about like they have WMYI. I have no idea about 100.5 nights, though.
