CLEAR CHANNEL/BANGOR. SOLD!

At least that's the rumor. Come on, somebody out there knows something, and if we coax them enough, they'll spill the info after a couple of beers!

I hear that there's a done deal. Or that at least it's very close to that.

Can't guarantee that this information is correct, but that's the drumbeat on the street.

That was the rumour floating around earlier in the week. Supposedly interested party or parties have gone in and kicked the radio tubes on tours.

Here are the three most likely based on who have been at the stations. All three buyers have bid on Bangor, Augusta, and serveral other markets. 1. A group headed by former Nasau people from Texas and New York. 2. A guy by the name Todd Lawley who is buying stations in Boise from CC and is a good friend of Larry Julias. 3. Speaking of Larry Julias, word is he has raised money from Eastern Maine Development Company and people in Vermont and still have an outside chance at Maine and Burlington (Julias denys this but then again, why would he admit to it)

would any of these guys buy sugarloaf as well? the ski resort is up for sale... hell if they did that, not only would they own a radio station they could own the mountain it trasmits from IE: TOS

Gosh Jamie!

I guess that would come under the "SKI, SNOW & SNOOZE" for sale package, wouldn't it? :p

TOS is operated out of CC's augusta group so i doubt there is a buyer for them yet

Just a fun little note--if you follow the link provided above to the BDN site, note the second item. Celtics games aren't being carried because nobody can drive down to the satellite receiver and change the station.

1.) It still saddens me how many radio people just don't get "it." Give the people what they want or they're not going to listen. It's that simple. How many die-hard Celtics fans are now going to switch to an alternate media--never to return again?
2.) I'm remiss to why exactly they can't just trigger the satellite remotely. Granted now I work in the big league of Portland radio, but even in college I worked at a poor, brink of extinction commercial station in WNY and we were able to change the satellite channel some 10 miles away with a quick phone call. Has CC fired their engineering staff?

Yes, I get it. It's really an elaborate lie to cover the fact that the Celts aren't selling much airtime and it ain't worth the energy to fix the satellite glitch. But still, couldn't they just say that? I hope the new owner is a better spin artist.

Take it from someone who once programed the Celts in Bangor... Also to defend the Bangor stations who don't carry the Celts. There was little revenue for the Celts, and ratings showed very little audience for them in Bangor. In this case sat receiver is not at the shack, it's in the building, and it's owned by sporting news radio. Why bother paying for programing that isn't paying for itself? For Portland, Boston is local, for Bangor, it's Sox, HS Basketball, and UMaine. ZON, & WABI, all had the Celts at one point. In this case, people who say they wanted it, didn't stand behind it when it was there. Just an observation...

Of course, ZON has plenty of nights in the winter to fill...since UMaine was given to CC...
]

ZON used to fill those off nights with celtics and bruins...now they'll have to increase the high school basketball or carry more celtics/bruins games or pick something national like ESPN Radio's NBA coverage or whatever Westwood one carries in the winter

Broadcasting ANY Sports is a double-edged sword!

Depending upon which games (or teams) a radio station has the license to carry....sports can mean extra revenue OR a decrease in listenership!

Face it...some radio listeners would prefer to WATCH A SPORT ON TV---while others can passively enjoy the play-by-play on the road, in the office, or the rec room!

Unfortunately...non-sports types resent a sports interruption that cancels out their favorite music or talk show host! So they either get angry at the radio station and stop listening...OR..."tough it out" until their favorite radio station resumes its regular programming?

There's really no right or wrong answer until the sales and programming departments "run the numbers" and see if extra advertising dollars are worth an inconsistant format? Unless, of course, the format of the radio station happens to be ALL SPORTS! ::)
